“Fatty liver” literally means your liver fills with fat, which paves the way for chronic disease and inflammation. Fatty liver is a dangerous yet misunderstood disease. It is also very common, affecting 90 million Americans alone. You need a healthy liver to combat toxic junk and chemicals in your environment. A healthy liver means your body stays healthy, you don’t get sick, and you maintain plenty of energy. A fatty liver, on the other hand, has numerous repercussions including inflammation, which triggers insulin resistance and prediabetes, meaning your body deposits fat in your liver and organs, including your belly (called visceral fat). Fatty liver can also lead to more serious problems including high triglycerides, low HDL (“good” cholesterol), and high amounts of small LDL (dangerous cholesterol particles that can cause heart attacks). Fatty liver also increases your heart attack risk.

In today’s episode of my series I’m calling Health Bites, I am talking about how to identify if you have fatty liver, what’s causing it, and how to fix it.

This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health and Athletic Greens.

3 months ago I was shocked when my GP told me my blood test showed high enzymes in my liver. The symptoms I had were tiredness and a tremor in my leg. I 've never drunk any alcohol. A few weeks later I got pain in my right shoulder that wouldn't go away. My cholesterol was 6.5. I started taking 'Active Liver' capsules, drank 2 litres of water each day plus tea and coffee, went for long walks and cut down on fats. I also started eating grapefruit every day. Last week I went for a follow up blood test and I'm delighted to say that my liver enzymes are normal again. The shoulder pain has gone. Hope this helps.

I had an abdominal CT for an unrelated matter and the doctor said it came back “perfect”. Something told me to go online and check the CT reading myself. The diagnosis was fatty liver disease. The doctor didn’t think it was any kind of a problem and didn’t think I needed to hear about it. However, it explains the fact that I have skinny arms and legs like twigs but a massive belly, I have lost 50% of my hair, high cholesterol, blood sugar problems and have thyroid and hormone problems. All of those can be explained by a toxic liver but doctors are so clueless because they don’t know anything about anything unless it’s a big Pharma symptom pill.
  • Just found out I have it. I think I've had it for decades ! I'm currently on a sugar-free, starch free soda free alcohol free ect, diet. Praying its not too late for me I'm 58.

I had fatty liver a few years ago. My doctor mentioned it after some test. But he just kept talking about the rest of my test. So I thought it must not be that bad. Same thing happened the next year but I then decided to check on what it meant myself. I couldn't believe he didn't seem to care or offer any advice. I have since changed my diet and life style. Lost 60 lbs so far and all my health problems are so much better. But why are doctors not telling us about this? It's so frustrating when those we trust to help us just don't.

My oncologist told me that fixing my fatty liver wouldn't help my cancer. Not that i needed that reason to do it..but i had hoped it would help. My scan showed that in 3 months i reversed rhe NAFL with carnivore. There was a small improvement in the tumor as well... small but worth investing the time and effort toward better health
  • I remember several years ago heroin addiction destroyed my life, I suffered from severe depression and a mental disorder until I was recommended to psilocybin mushroom treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly I'm 8 years clean now. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

I have NAFLD. Found out by accident when getting a scan for something else. I changed my diet and cut out almost all packaged foods, wheat, sugar. I started intermittent fasting, and supplements. My favorite supplement is Matcha Green tea tablets. Amazing stuff. I have lost over 35 lbs this year without changing my physical activity. I'm just starting to work out again so i expect to really start losing weight even faster.

I find it hilarious that people are pointing to gluten. Back in the seventies, when I was a kid) people ate all kinds of gluten and people weren’t sick like today. No one is talking about what they have been spraying on the oats and wheat until recently, maybe that’s the problem?

My husband had a radium test on his liver and was diagnosed with Gilbert’s Syndrome. About every 3 months he would be very ill and he said the symptoms felt like the worst hangover. He was slim, active and non diabetic. They found this out when he had cancer and didn’t tolerate the medication

I've known for years that I have NAFLD. Years ago my dr called me to say my liver enzymes were elevated...she discussed with me how to lower them without medication which I did successfully. Recently I had a cardiac ct scan which included contrast and also scanned my abdomen showing fat on my liver. I also have familial hypertriglyceridemia (?)which really makes this a battle. I don't want to go on medication for it so it's back to square 1 with my diet and exercise....wish me luck.

I got rid of my fatty liver in just over a year. I drink too much and at a medical asked my doctor is it because of alcohol. He said no it's because of carbs which I found odd. Turns out your liver digest carbs, not your stomach. But when you eat carbs along with alcohol, your liver prioritizes dealing with alcohol as it's a poison. The carbs get squished away in a queue as it were causing the problem. So drinking alcohol with a meal that includes carbs is a bad idea. So from then on I kept carbs and alcohol apart. That was all I did and the fatty liver went. But frankly most people need to eat healthier and avoid nasty 'food like substances' that are sold to us in shiny packaging. Good luck to you.

I was prediabetic, obese, and had NAFLD. I began a strategy of eating ONE glorious meal per day, with minimal carbs. After 6 months I was off 3 medications, lost 45lbs, cleared my liver of fat, and normalised by A1c (no longer prediabetic). After a year my weight is stable and I still avoid carbs, eating one or two meals per day. HDL up, TGL down. I eat meat, fish, eggs, bacon, and lots of green vegetables, Rarely fruit. Nothing with sugar, flour, pasta, potatoes, rice. Was I hungry?? IN the first 3 days my hunger was painful, but as the low carb diet started to have its effect, and my body fat began to burn my hunger changed to something very managable, after 2 weeks, although my gut was a bit noisy I did not really feel any of that deep hunger.
