Does a gyro really help? Flying a tiny plane in strong wind with a gyro • FMS 850mm Ranger

Publicado 2024-04-28
In this video, we'll take the 850mm FMS Ranger for a flight with some pretty crazy wind. We peaked out at 30mph on this fly day.

Thanks to FMS for sending the 850mm Ranger out for review.

You hit the nail on the head. The people that are against gyros are the ones usually afraid to fly whenever there’s a decent bit of wind
  • @deanedeane4318
..... and those that bag gyro's the most haven't tried one. By myself I learnt to fly with a 400mm p51 mustang with 3 gyro modes .......I really struggle to keep my mouth shut when I hear the negative comments......so it's another tool in the toolbox, f-off . Great video Lads and love from New Zealand 🙃😉😎

RTH modes usually require you to be 100 yards out or so before it will activate

I fly in high winds all the time. Only a few of us frequent the field I go to will. I've been flying with no gyro lately but I've done both. I look at it as skill training. Risky coming down in a cross but super fun.

Some gyros won’t initialize right away if the wind is rocking them. I don’t know what the problem was with RTH.

Nice demo..i have a couple of dozen planes i fly that are deltas and planes 1100 mm and much less using no gyros.i also have purchased a few different rtf micros with stabilization and they are amazing to fly even in wind like you have here...lots of fun and worry free...the key is to set them up without wind though..also keep them closer in windy conditions...that plane having gps is pretty cool and if plane got to far to see would save it from being crashed or lost which is something i never had...lost ,crashed and repaired a lot of planes over the years...

I don't use gyros because I don't need them yet. But the gyros have a place a time and a use case. For newer pilots just learning, It can be useful if you lose orientation, if your eyesight is not as good as it was before, if you get dizzy. If you get sick, if the wind all of a sudden picks app to a point that you're uncontrollable, and I can keep going. with a flip of a switch is the difference between taking your plane home in one piece Or order a new one.😁
  • @Legalmachinist
From the description I interpret the RTH function to only operate when the plane has exceeded the fence limit (eg when you have likely lost orientation!).
  • Nate saylor also reviewed this plane. the beep on the remote is a minute counter and he was unable to successfully use the return to home function
  • @Legalmachinist
I was looking at the ad description from the plane link you provided. Seems there is some inconsistency.

Playing with the wind with a gyro equiped plane is loads of fun. I like to fly a plane like a kite fly backwards, sideways to the point of stalling all safe because of the gyro. When the wind stops I have to work harder to fly. Recently I decided to land into the wind trying to do a vertical landing but a gust made sure it landed in reverse. great fun

you're the second review I watched on this plane and the other one the GPS didn't work either. A lot of people might lose their planes relaying on the GPS
  • I’ve had this exact plane for awhile now and it is a good flyer, but the gps is total garbage. Completely a gimmick! It should work due to its cost. However It will fly away when you are needing it. Trust me! It will definitely not come back. It just bobs back and forth till you can not see it any more. I contacted Fms on this and they just sent me round and round wanting me to prove it. Well you have the same issue… so I just fly it as a park flyer and forget the gps junk. Fms defiantly did not stand behind it! Hopefully this helps others before buying. Also the front wheel is extremely brittle. One Little Rock or bump and it breaks. Very, very brittle front gear.
