We've used cannabis for tens of thousands of years. Not just to get high but also to make textiles, paper, medicine and much more. We then outlawed it for decades – only to realize the stuff is pretty good at helping fight climate change. So get ready for the cannabis comeback.

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Our new channel Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. Every Friday we'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

  • It wasn't a mistake, it was highly effective for the chemical companies and police state prison industries that pushed for it.

My Brother had Leukemia and broken hip. last last 3 years of his life got daily Morphine injection. two month before he die, switched to cannabis, He told me doctors betrayed him giving him morphine , which made him addicted and out of control. Cannabis took the pain away without losing his consciousness.

Hemp is literally almost made for humans, it's kinda strange how perfect a plant could synergize with our creativity

I live in Japan and have many clothes made of hemp, the oldest fiber material in the country. Hemp clothes are very very nice to wear and see. Hemp is by far the best plant in the world for multiple usages. We should all grow hemp.

Hemp is a wonderful plant, especially because it does not need a lot of water, fertilizer and no pesticides and produces a lot of biomass. It would be a wonderful addition for farmers to diversify their crop rotation.

My great-grandfather made a lot of things from hemp using different parts of the plant - baskets, ropes, rags, sacks, door mats, even an air filter! And that was a century ago. For the record, the hemp plant he used had very different characteristics from "ganja". It's a separate species (Cannabis ruderalis maybe, but I'm not sure). It got banned a long time ago, not because people were misusing it, but because narrow-minded and/or vile-tempered politicians did not want the general populace to have access to such a versatile plant. It allowed people to be independent and self-sufficient in many aspects of their daily lives. And that's something Big Brother does not like.

Psilocybin saved my life. I was addicted to heroin for 15 years and after Psilocybin treatment I will be 3 years clean in September. I have zero cravings. This is something that truly needs to be more broadly used in addiction treatment.

A few years ago I started using weed for pain. It literally saved my life. A couple years ago my fried lost his sister to an accidental overdose due to pain from a horrible car accident. I believe she’s still be here if she’d had access to weed. It makes me think of all the people who have lost their lives in a similar manner or even lost the life they knew because they fell into the trap of being prescribed pain meds then those are stopped by doctors without realizing their patients had a new problem. I think there have been millions. It makes me furious and so sad

It was a pity you didn't mention in detail one of the other major reasons there was such a massive campaign to prohibition. The fact that hemp oil was a direct competitor to fossil fuels and that wasn't convenient for the big shots that owned and profited from oil companies.
  • @Hiddenus1
I remember reading some books where they mention hemp made products and was always wondering if it's either different kind of hemp or for some reason we went different path for some reason and now we are rediscovering it's potential.
  • @juuk3103
It's a super plant with so many uses, the fact you can use every part of it is amazing.... The flowers, the fibers, the oil such an amazing plant
  • @1Maklak
Banning hemp was not so much a mistake, as successful lobbying by DuPont corporation, which was pushing for the use of Nylon and other artificial fibres. Newly formed anti-drug police in the USA also had a vested interest in banning hemp. Great documentary otherwise.
  • Simple and well explain documentary, continue sharing this kind awareness.
  • @Waya420
hemp and bamboo are such amazing versatile plants.
  • @zdspider6778
The fact that its completely biodegradable is underestimated. A lycra or polyester t-shirt will take 500+ years to decompose.
  • my mom once told me that my great grandparents were growing hemp to make clothes and i was so confused because i thought it's just a drug. i hope hemp will be more popular and it wont be associated with drugs only :)
  • @Tareyak
Watching this stoned at 6am laughing at stoner pirates with their hemp ships, brings Captain Jack Sparrow into a whole new light xD
