We make a game out of the tourist groups. We use it as a chance to people watch and make up funny stories about the crazies. It makes it a bit more bearable. We have also come up with a great method of how to loosely plan our days without getting stuck in a bad day because of weather or missed connections. We make a list of the priority things to see or do and a secondary list of if we have time things for every trip. That is all we go with for plans, nothing structured at all and then the night before we go over the lists, the weather and any weird train or bus things and based on those things drop things from the to do list onto tomorrow's schedule. If something comes up, all we have to do is look back at our list and pick one of the other activities that may suit better. We also try to be aware of closed days for attractions and museums in advance so we don't leave something for the last day that is closed that day. It isn't always perfect, but it does prevent most issues we've had come up. We used it for Yosemite last summer and despite half the trip being rainy, we saw and did everything on our priority list.
  • I agree especially about the tour groups. One thing I would add that I hate, is that in recent years, it feels like everywhere is becoming more "globalized". This seems to increase with each passing decade. So the local charm and culture of certain places seems to exist less and less with each passing year. It is a bit annoying to travel across the world and not hear a bit of local music, and just hear American pop and hip hop everywhere. Even the buskers I find reflect the local culture less and less with each passing year. And I find less and less predominance of affordable/fast local food, and more and more generic McDonalds/kebab places/shitty pizza places. This is why I would reccommend that people with the means to travel do so sooner rather than later, because I fear that as time passes, this whole globalization trend will only get worse.

WHERE IS "LONG FLIGHT TIMES ?" Seriously this is my least favourite thing about traveling - FLYING! Once I get there, I'm super relieved and happy.. But those 12 hour flights, my god... Glad to hear you're heading to Russia next year I can't wait for your travel advice there!
  • What's disappointing for you may not be for others. The leaning tower of Pisa may just be a building with bad foundation, but it might be of interest to engineers or physicists. No place would be disappointing for me until I actually find it out for myself. Its part of the experience.
  • Traveling is a bit hit and miss for me. Sometimes it's great and other times I thought it was barely worth the time and effort. For me I really get messed up from jet lag on those long trips too. Also it takes a while to know what kind of traveller you are, adventure, culture or beach etc... and you can make some mistakes and go places you don't really want to be. And as you say some places are famous but when you get there in your own experience they're overrated.
  • @zagonde
"the train is going bye-bye" haha cracked me up

Many on your list really do not bug me but I will add that I hate the many local tourist scams. Tuk Tuk drivers and gem scams in Thailand; lost friendly girls in Budapest; petition or survey girls all over Europe; fake hotel pizza menus in Orlando, Florida; bracelet gift in Rome. Every country has them so be prepared. Oh and I hate all the selfie sticks! Great video Mark!
  • Some "overrated" place like Brussels can be enjoyable and worthwhile, if expectations are lowered.
  • When I first went to Italy in 1997, I had some truly awful meals. When we went back in 2013, we never had a bad meal. The difference was that we used TripAdvisor’s great app. It detects your location and shows you all the restaurants around you. The better the reviews, the bigger the dot. Many times my husband wanted to head for some tourist trap on the square, and instead I found a wonderful restaurant around the corner, full of locals, with great food. We kept to restaurants in the top 25% and never had a problem. You also need to understand that you’re eating local cuisine, not the American version of their food.
  • I hate disrespectful travelers, those who refuse to embrace the culture they're visiting by refusing to learn even the basic words and phrases on the native language, those who are loud yet unfriendly and, the worst of all; those who compare everything negatively to back home. I love to experience other cultures and try to immerse myself in them as much as I can.

I visited Zurich in January for a wedding and I loved it because the cold/snow kept the crowds away. A few inches of snow wasn't going to kill my visit. It just reminded me of NYC in January. Once I went to a zoo on rainy day and I basically had the entire zoo to myself.

I currently live in Milan, I moved here two years ago and I can say that only by living here you cand understand how beautiful life here is. It is a wonderful city to discover, maybe not the most touristic one but there are plenty of places to spot and there is always something cultural/fun to do ;)
  • You are crazy! Making this video it took an insane production (planning)! xD ...but I loved it. ^^
  • Wow! How many years did it take you to shoot this video?
  • A place being overrated is subjective. I have friends who really liked the Eiffel tower but also have friends who said that it is overrated.
  • I find with every single thing on the Internet, be it vacation destinations, hotels, restaurants, beaches, electronic gadgetry, recipes, clothes, books, music, cameras .... you name it, some will love it, some will hate it. I've bought stuff people have slagged off and for me it's been great. The only way to know is to see for yourself. Personally I loved Pisa, to turn that corner and see that tower in all its newly-cleaned splendour was stunning.

I always like nr. 9. The planning, budgeting, researching etc. Love it!
  • @Sonny0276
Great Video 👍. Thank you for posting.
  • Finally a shout out to Tucson and it's extreme weather. Jacket weather in the morning and sun tanning weather by noon. Best of luck to ya on your fellow travels Mark. From Tucson with Love.
