ESKA FALLS (And beyond...) 9/10/23

Published 2023-09-16
The following weekend after the Palmer Lakes ridge traverse, we headed out to a go-to type stomping ground; Eska Falls. This time, however, it was time for me to see what was above the falls. My hiking partner had been back there before, and was more than glad to keep going.

Little did I know what would be revealed, and it was almost a life changing experience! I was expecting something more rugged and rocky overall, not an absolutely stunning valley ripe with waterfalls and berry bushes. My reaction in the video is genuine awe.

To get back there requires a little over a mile of hiking on a ATV/4x4 road to access the trailhead. From there, its 3 miles of meandering, switchback trail to the top of the slope that also connects back with ATV trails that take you to the falls. A small foot trail leads steeply uphill and back along Eska Creek and back to where we ended up.

This trail is actually a backpacking route that takes you up and over a spot called Elbow Pass, then back to Dnigi Hut, one of a number of mountain huts tucked back in the Talkeetna Mountains.

Car to car saw a round trip of about 16 miles.

Music selection had to match the scenery, so I decided to go with a more Viking/Fantasy theme.

First up is FALKENBACH. An absolute legend who's been slinging the Viking/Heathen themed wares since the 1990s.

Next up is a project called Stratorus, who play a blackened metal with heavy odes to Bathory among others. Same man who's responsible for the Void Alchemy project featured in the previous video. No doubt he draws inspiration from the scenery in his home of Colorado.

Tyler, absolutely fantastic work on this. There was so much of this where I was actually in disbelief as to what I was seeing. Great music choices, as always.
