Before they become snipers, all students must graduate from the US Army Sniper Course, a seven-week program that teaches soldiers from the Army and National Guard essential skills in fieldcraft and marksmanship. Insider spent two days at the US Army Sniper Course inside the Fort Benning military installation near Columbus, Georgia, where we observed various classes at different stages of training.

Just 288 students are accepted into the Sniper Course each year, and roughly half pass the course and graduate. Students learn to operate several weapons systems and must master hitting targets up to 1,100 meters away. Prospective snipers learn how to create ghillie suits, a type of camouflage clothing that snipers use to blend in with their environment. They are educated in a wide array of fieldcraft skills, including target detection, range estimation, and stalks, where they must stealthily move through wooded terrain without being spotted by instructors. Those who are able to graduate from the course could be deployed into combat as snipers immediately if necessary.

  • My sergeant once said to me "I didn't see you at camouflage training this morning", I said "thank you very much"

When I was in the Army, I was told that even the honor of attending Sniper School is a great accomplishment. Few pass and that is for a reason.
  • Sniper’s are the elite of the elite, absolutely no room for error with so many factors, variables, elements and situations to consider in seconds.

How is business insider a better recruiter than most actual recruiter

My nephew went through and graduated this course. He tells stories about what went on during his time there. This video is exactly how he describes it. He went on to Afghanistan, and came home safely, thanks to this training he received. Tough course.
  • I was 20 years in the Army. Never had any interest in being a sniper. I guess now I know why. Max respect to those that did and do.
  • My mother always said that I was lazy because I lay down for 3 days, but I told her that I was training to be a sniper.

I will never forget basic at Ft. Knox, 1973, when they took us out to the sniper course. Drill sarge said to look out across the field and woods and identify the snipers. Well, nobody could identify one. Sarge had them come out and damn, 5 of them came out from their lairs, in the trees, on the ground. One was within 10yards of our position.

I was fortunate enough to enter sniper school in the early 2000’s. Unfortunately, I didn’t finish, but did make it to week 3. Just those 3 weeks help me realize that was NOT my calling. Kudos to all who at least had the guts to try!
  • 4:07 I really appreciate that Both those men. One is clearly aware that he needs to get better with the wind and the other isn’t sugar coating it saying that it’s good. I’m sure you have to be very precise in battle so having those types of people to set an example is awesome 👏

I always wanted to be a sniper. Fresh out of highschool my goal was to join the army, go infantry, and get my Ranger Tab. I wanted to be an army ranger sniper. I went to the local recruiting office and took the practice AS FAB test. I needed to improve my math scores to be a sniper. I studied, and trained my body. But a previous knee injury stopped me from joining.. heavy respect for all those who do and have served

We started the class with 25, finished with 11. It was the best training I ever had. Class of 95. Retired 11B40B4H.

When I was a kid I always dreamed of being in the military. But as I grew up the reality of the occupation made me realize it's not me. So much respect for our armed forces.
  • this is the most Positive talks in every army documentary i've ever watched. less yelling, simple explanation by the instructor, and also great job keeping the motivation up.

Ton of respect towards those who endure this training. Having a well trained sniper can make or break an engagement from succeeding or failing so it’s cool to see what goes on.
  • @RH-iy6vq
"If you heard the shot, you weren't the target".

When that trainee said "It's bushing time" that was truly one of the moments in history.
