Herobrine is the biggest legend in all of gaming. Becoming so synonymous with minecraft, that his name forever reminds us of the nostalgic past. But what if I told you that his story was wrong, and that 13 years later, the truth was only just uncovered...

It's honestly scarier having Herobrine's origin lie in an actual bug than from a creepypasta. Originating from within the game with real user encounters is completely different from originating from just a scary story.
  • @fosminclorin
It's interesting to know that Herobrine originates from a real bug in a way
  • @ethanmoon3925
I think the true origin of Herobrine/ white eyes is the eerie loneliness of early Minecraft. People would rather imagine a monster than deal with that much emptiness.
  • It would be terrifying if instead of saying "removed herobrine", it said "added herobrine" in a new update.
  • I remember being scared of Herobrine as a child, 6 years later, This video was posted and brought my memories back. I can't believe the community is still discovering new things.

I never heard of "White Eyes" before, but between the two, I would find White Eyes more troublesome than Herobrine. A mob that randomly digs tunnels & stares at you isn't really a problem, but a mob that destroys your light sources while you're caving is setting you up for other mobs to attack you on your way back to the surface.

I only ever knew about the Herobrine as we know him today, but hearing about how he originally started as two white eyes in the darkness suggests to me that he very much likely started out as some rendering bug. It doesn't surprise me how it soon turned into a creepypasta considering the atmosphere that Minecraft had back then.

This video is so high-quality. The music, the editing, and the custom White Eyes model really made it spooky. I remember when we all used to be so scared of Herobrine, when we look back on it, it seems silly, but this video brought it all back.

Im so glad to see herobrine becoming relevant again. I like seeing him come to life once more, especially because of all the new mods and datapacks that can cause him to actually terrorize you
  • Two different things to consider. There was a glitch in the indev and alpha builds that would replace the skin of some mobs with the player standard skin There were also problems with torches suddenly vanishing world generation when a player updated their world. These problems however were solved or mostly well before the official release however. Sometimes when they were solving a problem with skin or texture rendering they would refer to it as removing herobrine and notch later said so himself.

Ain't nobody gonna talk about 13 years later and disc thirteen, its an interesting coincidence

Funny thing is, there was a player on the server I play on in 2015 who almost got banned because he unintentionally started the belief that our server was haunted by Herobrine. He didn't even realize it, he just had the habit of making really long and very straight 2x2 tunnels that he would replace mined out rocks on the side and would take the torches back when he was done. In itself not very odd but he dug a lot of tunnels so it was a pretty common occurrence that someone would come across one and get freaked out by it. I knew about his tunneling because he popped up right next to my house once trying to figure out what he ran into (our server has towny). One of the older mods decided to also play some random pranks around the same time involving random stuff like cobble pillars with lit netherrack on the top that they would relight with lightning when someone would try to put it out, random cobblestone structures, and leaf stripping trees. That mod also usually played hidden (we joke that they are the ghost of the server) so the weird stuff would often happen and no one would figure it out. I also knew about the mod doing that stuff just from obeservation and the fact that if you called them out by name they would always respond. The admin actually got really concerned and confused about it and when he asked me if I knew what was going on and that if whoever was doing this was being malicious because several of the younger players were genuinely scared and didn't want to get back on as long as "Herobrine might get them". I hadn't realized how bad it was since I kind of was already in the know but I explained everything I knew and that neither the player or mod were really being malicious, just very bad timing. Everything got sorted in the end and that is really what pushed for our server to have a better system of communication. Now everyone on the server are just used to finding random tunnels all over although he usually does 3x3 tunnels these days. 😂
  • Interesting note here: During the Beta 1.8 Adventure Update's development, before having green eyes, enderman had white eyes, so they were originally Notch's way to add "White Eyes" into the game, combining how they are black and blend in with dark caves and how they could take and place every single block in the game, they would have been very interesting
  • @doughboywhine
Honestly White Eyes actually sounds like it could be a very cool mini boss-type mob. It inhabits random caves in world gen, disables nearby mob spawning, and is only tangible in the dark. You would have to take note of how strange your cave is being and then remove any torches you have placed to find and fight it.

I think one of the most interesting aspects of stories like this is the fact that the original creators are just entirely unknown. And that applies to any and all online myths, creepypasta, etc. In an age where everything exists forever on the internet, it's kind of wild to think that those who were once so heavily involved in the community that they inspired an entire movement that is an integral part of the game's history, just.. don't know what they did? Like, what are they doing now? Were they just young kids having fun, and when life caught up with them, they moved on from it all and never happened to look back? Did they live under circumstances were one day they were just unable to have computer/internet access? Did they just stop caring? It's all so interesting. You would think by now we would have dozens of people claiming to be these users. But so far, not a peep. The other possibility is that they've kept their silence all these years in dedication to the bit. I which case, mad props to that determination. Instead of claiming their 15 minutes of fame, they're allowing an internet legend to live on in mystery and, in essence, keeping it alive. I seriously respect that kind of commitment. I do hope they come forward some day. It's still a part of Minecraft history, and digging into the origins of these legends is still interesting. I think it okay for them to make themselves known at this point and tell their stories, now that it's the people themselves asking them to. oh and i guess the third possibility is that they are dead, but that isnt nearly as fun to wonder about
  • My favorite stories or "sightings" about White Eyes and Herobrine tend to be the ones where neither is hostile, or at least don't seem to be, but instead enjoy causing anomalies around the player's world, and creepily observing from the shadows. I'm inclined to form a head canon of these two entities coexisting. At 18:10 we see both White Eyes and Herobrine meeting, while Herobrine walks away leaving White Eyes behind. What if White Eyes prefers to only lurk inside dark caves, while Herobrine doesn't mind being in the light, just like a regular player? Maybe they've arrived to an understanding of some sort, and agreed that Herobrine would be in charge of observing the player in most places, dark or otherwise, while White Eyes would inhabit the dark places. Or maybe it wasn't a deal at all, but a threat. Maybe Herobrine, being perhaps more evil than White Eyes, forbade her from showing herself to a player or to mess with their world ever again, since he wanted to be the sole creepy watcher and NPC builder/destroyer of the game. And for 13 years, he has had his way. Could our discovery of White Eyes tilt the scales and allow for her to be on equal grounds with Herobrine again, even if just from the shadows?
  • How has no one commented that he took the time to find out the seeds from the screenshots and recreated stories for the video that looked so seamless? 10/10 video production from TheMisterEpic as always
  • I remember all the old mods being made about Herobrine, they were usually very poorly executed but man were they scary as a child. It's kinda nice to see Herobrine being relevant again.
  • It's 2024 and been playing on different bedrock and java servers. Almost no one even mentions "Herobrine" or has a herobrine name anymore. Gosh I miss those 2014 days where in every suspicious activity leads to people thinking that Herobrine is in your world or hacking in the server. Good times.
