An earthquake shook the densely populated New York City metropolitan area Friday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey said, with residents reporting they felt rumbling across the Northeast.

The agency reported a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.7, centered near Lebanon, New Jersey, or about 45 miles west of New York City and 50 miles north of Philadelphia. The Fire Department of New York said there were no initial reports of damage.

The real worry that USGS is concerned with, is that the 4.7-4.8 mag quake could be the weaker prelude to something much bigger.. (bear in mind, most of the structures in New York, especially the skyscrapers & bridges, weren't constructed with earthquakes in mind, so anything greater than a 6.5+ is going to cause damage...)

How about calling it the earthquake in New Jersey, because that is where the epicenter was, not NYC.

Wolf Blitzer never fails to amaze with intellectual genius: Earthquake in New Jersey, says "Earthquake in New York, felt even by people in New Jersey".

Would the solar eclipse have anything to do with the earthquake??
  • If our continent is still pulling away from Europe at nine inches a year, might this be a hiccup in that process?
