Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul. Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul. Sounds like there's an Echo in here ey, you having that and today we're breaking down the new Marvel series. Created under the banner Marvel Spotlight this was something that the company also used in the comics to try out side characters in their own leading titles. It kinda feels like thats whats happened with Echo as well as she's never really been a massive name in the source material and I was kinda surprised that she got her own show. There was then rumours that her series was a disaster and lots of things circulated around it in the build up to it's release.

Firstly Marvel reportedly cut out an entire episode dropping it down to six and they also announced it was gonna be a day one drop. Lastly they weren't gonna be allowing reviews until the day of relesae and yeah. It's been a weird one in the build up to the project. However people had hope when they saw they were going for a mature audience and featuring both Daredevil and Kingpin heavily.

Has it worked?

Is the MCU alive, Is MCU dead or whatever state the schoedingers francishe is in that week.

  • I’m Choctaw and the interpretation of Natives in this series is the best I’ve seen. The Chafa is the number one in the Choctaw language and is indeed the first woman of the Choctaw peoples name. The historical accuracy gives me pride. The Lighthorsemen weren’t created just for the comics but it’s an actual police force that’s still alive today. Almost every tribe in Oklahoma has Lighthorse police officers who deal with Native affairs along with the tribal governments that reside in Oklahoma
  • As a member of the Choctaw Nation, absolutely stoked to see representation of our language and culture on screen. Thank you for a great review and for watching the show. The wood pecker, Biskinik, in Choctaw lore is a messenger or omen. Our tribe's newspaper is called the Biskinik after the messenger bird. The Choctaw Nation had staff members that were heavily involved with the lore and design. A Choctaw artist, Steven Paul Judd, was on the writing and story editing team. Though it wasn't the best Marvel product, it was still a huge success for Choctaw Nation and indigenous representation. I'm glad we got to see and appreciate the hard work of the studio unlike Batgirl.
  • Just because you have twins doesn’t mean your dad jokes can be twice as bad 😂

This is one of my favorite shows that they have put out so far, I love how it revolved around her Chocktaw heritage and from that she pulled through against Kingpin’s empire
  • @brian2991
I think it was a really good character study, and I liked watching her reconnect with family, and the tension of resolving her childhood trauma and the tension in her relationship with Fisk. Fisk felt like a manifestation of her demons from childhood (hurt, rage), and it was clever how they dovetailed his background story into this show to explain that and also keep him really three dimensional. Maya in the comics was fine, but I enjoyed this version more — rooting her more in (what seemed like) a more authentic portrayal of her cultural lineage, instead of just someone with cool powers. But then on top of that, the fight scenes with Daredevil and in the skating rink were great!

I actually loved the flashbacks and storytelling. And I really liked this little vignette series. I think it'll be a good path for Disney/Marvel to use for minor/mid characters, that way the main films/tv shows aren't bogged down by too much exposition and forced backstory. And also, that's one of the biggest critiques I feel like. Either they're too bogged down by exposition, or they didn't go in depth enough for the comic book fans and are dumbing it down for broad audiences. This structure, I feel, is a good remedy for alot of those arguments/critiques And I loved that they dropped all the episodes at once, cause I feel like it would've been a Lot harder to get into/stay interested if it were just 1 episode a week.

I actually really enjoyed this series when I wasn’t expecting much from it. It reminded me of the What If.. episode with Kahhori which I also really enjoyed. It seems like they’re doing a great deal of research to pay the proper respect to these tribes and I love it. The way they integrate their culture into the story telling is awesome. Would love another season of Echo 🫶🏽
  • @TheJaker5
Listen it wasn’t bad. It was a bit contrived and the TVMA rating was clearly used as a promotional strategy (along with Daredevil) because there were only like 2 episodes that even came close to that rating. That said, I did enjoy much of it despite only getting Daredevil for 2 minutes in episode 1. I did appreciate all the Chactaw related stuff and I felt like the episodes all flowed pretty well, the music choices were great, and THE BEST PART of the series was the reveal in the finale when Biscuit turned his grandmas mail truck into a monster truck with parts from the junkyard where we thought he was just fixing the damage. It was a great Marvel comedic moment!
  • @stevepool8034
Paul, I love your stuff and breakdowns, but sometimes you can be over the top. I agree that ep one was a bit too much of a repeat of what we already saw, but I really enjoyed the remaining and getting to know Maya and her family and ancestors. The ending wasn't a super crescendo, but it was satisfying enough to set the stage for the next Echo or Kingpin chapter. I mean everything can't be a super blockbuster. And it doesn't need to be to entertain. Anyways, as always thanks for your insights and working hard to stay abreast of what's going on in the Scifi and Marvel worlds. You're one of my main go-to's and I appreciate it. 👍
  • @brian2991
Also, when Marvel writes a show like a big movie instead of having strong arcs in each episode, I think they SHOULD release the episodes all at once. When they don’t, people have complained about uneven pacing. I think they released all the episodes here as a course correction based on the overwhelming amount of similar feedback, rather than a signal that they didn’t have faith in the show, and it was the right move
  • @beauyork8768
Wild. I loved that they did a recap episode for the first one. After Hawkeye nurfed Kingpin I felt like this helped recalibrate her story using a combination of what we've seen and what we haven't. I usually agree with you but I gotta go in a different direction overall with this spotlight/series. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found myself in tears at least 3 times. I didn't know or care about the making of issues but for what we got I think it was beyond solid. But to each their own.
  • I thought the show was way better than Paul did, and no, I'm not Native American. Both my parents passed away in the past 3 years. It hits hard that she misses her mother, and her connection to her mother from beyond the grave. After my mother passed away, I had a lot of dreams I was seeing her again and talking to her. I would sometimes see my Dad after he passed, butbhe was his younger self that I remember when I was growing up. I sometimes wear a shirt with the Jamaican flag on it to hold on to my ancestors. The motorcycle helmet Echo wears is the exact same one I have. I started riding a motorcycle after my Mom passed away. I started running the risk in away to tempt fate, since I miss my Mom so much I can't live without her. In a way I'm not just tempting fate, I'm giving fate the finger since it took my parents. I think you may have missed a detail. I'm pretty sure the motorcycle Echo rides is an "Indian" . I know its too on the nose , but it looks close.
  • Side Note.. Kingpin did get an Iron Man suit in the Armor Wars comic. It won’t be too far fetched to see it in the MCU.
  • @auto1025
You’re wrong. Best show they’ve done in a while. It wasn’t perfect but it was very good… not mediocre. The cultural aspects make the character much stronger. The lack of knowledge in the symbolism isn’t your fault and the storytelling wasn’t as smooth, but the native aspect was helped a lot by What If. It was stretched a bit but not to the level of all the other plus shows. I’d love to see a sequel or the character extended into other stories for sure.
  • @HaleysTusk
I can’t decide whether it’s a shame Echo lost an episode, or that maybe Marvel tightened up the story more efficiently. Definitely a good idea to drop all at once because it might’ve shed viewers earlier if you had to wait a week. I actually enjoyed it, in the top half of Marvel D+ shows IMO
  • @challiray
That opening scene with the clay people is the literal Choctaw creation story. They are Adam and Eve, if you will.
  • @Ethan-wr2ve
I liked the series a lot. Chula’s character was complex. Abandoning Maya was wrong but sometimes things so horrible happen that we are not equipped to deal with. She clearly felt remorse and loved Maya greatly. A nice spotlight of generational trauma both in Maya and Fisk. I liked learning about the Choctaw people and the action sequences were cool. I think the final confrontation w Fisk was rushed because how did Kingpin even escape and the goons in the vans weren’t able to get out after Biscuits drove over the van? I’d give the series a 7/10
  • @nim411
Echo was surprisingly good! I enjoyed all 5 episodes.
  • This was refreshing and was less about the MCU and more about this culture. I loved it! More, please.
