Ep:243 FACTS ABOUT CARBOHYDRATES: INSULIN SUPPRESSION - by Robert Cywes

Published 2022-06-21
FACTS ABOUT CARBOHYDRATES: INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT OF INSULIN SUPPRESSION. The internet is full of people with static advice about “this is the best way to eat for the rest of your life” per their beliefs and n=1 experience. This is confusing and misleading and causes conflict and chaos. Your eating pattern is a CONTINUUM OF CHANGE based upon your METABOLICS and whether you are correcting or preventing harm. This video explores the continuum of your relationship with carbohydrates at various STAGES OF CHANGE. Know where you are on your journey and respond appropriately. Your coaches and healthcare providers should MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE AND HELP YOU TAKE THE NEXT STEP IN YOUR JOURNEY, NOT FORCE YOU TO BE LIKE THEM. Our videos reflect real data from an extremely busy clinical practice dealing with metabolic health transition. Know the scientific truth about how your body works. Ask and answer the right questions to optimize your health! Whether you agree or disagree with our content, if we’ve made you think and ask questions, we’ve done our job. Leave comments below.

Research Discussed... Data from our clinical practice. You cannot find this stuff in the literature yet.

"Metabolic health is a lifestyle, it's not a diet". Amen!
  • @mk_78
This timeframe makes so much sense. Thanks for the perspective. I'm 3 months carnivore or ketovore and am so excited to someday fix my resistance. Its a blessing that it can be reversed.
  • @tracy3812
Minimum 2 yrs to fix insulin resistance. No wonder I feel broken.
  • I think you are underrated. You definitely are the best doctor on this very specific matter.

While watching this I had a AH-Ha moment. It started adding up. I see so many versions of keto and carnivore on these channels with all different requirements for this many or that many carbs or carnivore with fruit and honey and raw milk and yet these people almost always are super fit. I wanna be like that but if I eat too many carbs or add fruit or honey the pounds will come back on. I see now from watching your podcast here that I am not 2 -3 years into being fat adapted. My insulin is not being suppressed yet so of course I shouldn't be adding in the carbs yet, like fruit, even though they can because they are already there (fat adapted, insulin suppressed, 2-3 years into keto) I wish I had known this about a year ago. So now I'm going to stick to "as close to zero total carbs" without going over 20 total carbs per day. Thank YOU so much for this podcast. It's going into my AAAVeryBest podcast saved group as I type this.

"Subtract your age from 100..... metabolic health is a lifestyle..." - I listened to that 3 times. Well said.
  • @jaimierose2985
You have caused a paradigm shift in my lifestyle and psyche, and I can't thank you enough!
  • @rjrnj1
Right now, I'm zero carbs because while my A1c has finally reached 5.3, I'm still determined to try to reach 5.0 (or lower) with your brilliant guidance. 🥰
  • @kaydavis5328
I appreciate your viewpoint. I eat for health but I used to eat for entertainment.
  • @arwenhardy1995
Brava, Dr. Cywes. It's very hard with my addictive personality to resist turning you into an idol. Lol. Much love & respect from a grateful patient. ❤️

I appreciate how your stance on carbohydrates is evolving and becoming more nuanced. I'm 56 years old, lean, I surf everyday and supplement with weight training. My liver fat is only 1.4%. So for me, 100 to 150 g of carbohydrates is very much a low-carb diet. It's almost a ketogenic diet actually because my energy needs are so high and my metabolic health so good. But for somebody who is obese and diabetic, they clearly cannot be messing around with that level of carbohydrates. I agree 100% that counting carbohydrates from vegetables is absurd. All vegetables should be considered a freebie.
  • Excited about the fiber video .. I can’t really tolerate any at all! I I now understand why I always tended to be constipated , even when I tried all the high fiber stuff ! I don’t eat fiber at all anymore , zero issues !
  • This explains what I do now that I'm getting to the end of the very strict carb diet. I believe I can make good choices knowing I can eat two meals and do it correct. I thought I had to eat one meal after I lost the weight . You are a great carb doc. I've lost 75 pounds pounds. Believe I can adjust and live a healthy life. Thanks 🌻
  • Thanks Dr. Cywes. Funny I never thought of fiber being a carbohydrate. Thanks for bringing it up.
  • @blackbandit1290
Once again, excellent description Dr. Cywes, along with nuances that explain the real situation for humans.
  • Dear Doc Cywes, I so appreciate your approach to a healthy lifestyle. Thank you!
