Let's Rank the New Big 12's Rivalries

The Power 2 Conferences, the SEC and B1G, are full of national rivalries. Everyone knows about the Iron Bowl, The Game, and even some of the more realignment focused rivalries, like the Red River Shootout and Oregon/Washington. But what does the Big 12 have now?

As a conference, they're kind of in a race with the ACC to become the "best of the rest". This has led to some interesting additions throughout the recent past, creating a patchwork quilt for next season that might not necessarily look the greatest for producing rivalries like the SEC and B1G already have. What they lack in major historical rivalries, though, they might make up for in some of the NCAA's newest rivalries.

That's the question I sought to answer here with this low-key, highly unedited, conversational style video---what are some of the Big 12's best and brightest rivalries for the near future, and is there any possibility of new ones being formed in front of our eyes?

I think the first new rivalry will be Arizona-Kansas. Naturally, this will start as an insanely talented basketball rivalry but could easily become a spicy football game with Jedd Fisch at Arizona and Lance Leipold at Kansas having those two schools on the up and up.

Texas Tech vs. TCU rivalry will be A tier. That horns down energy has to go somewhere. We already got the cactus emoji from it. Thank you by the way :).

Houston vs TCU. This is based on the utter hatred the city of Houston has for DFW and the utter indifference that DFW has for Houston. It is compounded by Cowboys vs Texans, Astros vs Rangers, and Mavericks vs Rockets. It will carry over into the Big XII

Funny enough, WVU and ISU have a friendly relationship in baseball and softball. WVU has a baseball team but no softball while ISU has the opposite. The two teams cheered for each other last year and have a fun relationship on social media

Tech and Osu need to realize they are a friendlyish rivalry. They love playing each other and are too much like each other to not form something

BYU VS TCU and Utah VS TCU is a rivalry that will become a rivalry again. BYU, Utah, and TCU were great rivals during the Mountain West Era because we were always competing for the Mountain West title. I feel like BYU fans still have a little bit of a chip on their shoulder from TCU. And I feel like that rivalry is going to be rekindled especially if all three teams find success in the BIG 12.

Hey thank you for the shoutout man I appreciate it! I definitely think the UCF rivalry is very hostile at the moment but the travel thing absolutely hurts it. That being said I really hope the West Virginia rivalry takes off because both schools need each other since they’re isolated from the entire conference.

As a Texan, I remember houston and TT having some beef just because they were both the overlooked air raid school who is more well known for basketball in Texas. I think it will probably end up being Houston's #1 rivalry and TT's #2 after TCU within 5 years of the new big 12. Also I-35 is pretty much the dividing point for west Texas and central TX even though it's in the middle of the state so TCU is pretty much the start of west Texas.

I think this would be amazing as a series analyzing all the rivalries in each conference now that they’re starting to solidify. Ranking Rivalries or something

Please make a stand-alone video about the holy war, between Utah and BYU. There is so much history behind it and is one of the most heated rivalries out there.

As a UCF fan, I definitely feel like UCF- Houston is trying to be forced based on both schools being the "Space U". Even when we were both in the American, we just treated it like a normal game. Now the Cincy rivalry is the total opposite. We really have nothing in common, we just naturally formed a rivalry since we always competed for American Championships. Still though, I do miss the War on I-4 between USF the most, is was always a close game no matter how bad or good each team was. I wish we had it as a permanent non-conference rival like Florida-FSU.

I feel like Iowa State vs Kansas is a pretty good rivalry, both on the court and on the field.

Personally think Tech/TCU should be in A. That rivalry is one season of both teams being great away from it becoming a must watch battle!

I think if the Big 12 adds Virginia Tech the VT vs WVU rivalry would skyrocket to the top of this list. Great video though!

I love these rivalry videos. I’d be super interested to see a video like this for other conferences. Especially the SEC. I’m a Texas fan so seeing our game with A&M come back next year has me really excited, tho I would say all of Texas considers Oklahoma our main rival. I’m also very interested to watch the Big 12 next year, as I grew up watching my team play against most of what is the big 12 I feel like I have a soft spot to watch where y’all go from here. I know there’s a lot of animosity around the whole SEC thing, which I do think is better for both parties, but I’ll always appreciate the Big 12 teams we would face in the 2000s and 2010s. Wish y’all the best.

I’m a Texas Tech fan and I’d move the Houston/Tech rivalry up to at least D tier if not C
  • @hutchings003
Years ago, there was a heated TCU-Utah rivalry, when those schools dominated the Mountain West and were breaking through the BCS when they weren’t P5/P4
  • @supplerGaming
As a ttu fan, I think a rivalry with Houston is brewing, we’ve played quite a few times in the last few years and I think a lot of tech fans would welcome it. Give it a few years and I think it’ll start to become more heated between us and Houston.

Baylor/Houston I imagine will develop as a basketball rivalry considering they’re arguably the two most successful basketball programs in Texas. I’m sure that Houston would love to demolish Baylor and Baylor would love to demolish Houston. The seeds for hate I think are there, they just need to grow into something extremely competitive.
