As a 46yo Berlin resident, I remember these days. By the time the eighties rolled around, daring escapes were pretty rare... My father made it out of East Berlin by packing just a small briefcase with clothes and pretending he was just heading through Checkpoint Charlie for a day visit to West Berlin. He couldn't even tell my grandparents what he was doing as you just never knew when the Stasi was listening to you either with devices or with the ears of your neighbours who would rat you out for the smallest benefit.
