The Upper Size Limits Of Sauropods
Published 2024-03-03
Lately there has been a lot of interest in the maximum size ranges of sauropod dinosaurs. Some believe they could have been as big as the biggest whales. In this video I discuss.

My opinion is next: 1) I think the upper limit was around 120 - 130 tons.. 2) 70 - 80 tons for argentinosaurus sounds realistic, based on its remains. 3) Dreadnoughtus is overestimated. 4) Puertasaurus is underestimated.

How big do you think the biggest sauropod dinosaurs could be? Mike

Definitely some thought provoking ideas with that... My best estimation on how big an animal can ever get depends on the regenerative capacity of its environment. Suggesting, in a hot house with high CO2 levels, that might be pretty big, but how big, who knows - at least, it would have to be a lot bigger than what's observable today on earth.

I definitely think a renewed interest in sauropods in general has been ignited by Prehistoric Planet 1 & 2! Although there is no doubt that sauropods could get almost unimaginatively huge, I still think even the largest sauropod of them all would still be lighter in mass than the blue whale.
