This video was mainly based on a transcript of the article "Balkanska kletva? Rat i nacija na prostoru bivše Jugoslavije" from the newspaper Crvena Kritika by MO Crveni. Some sections have been supplemented by me (for the sake of adjusting it to the video format and my audience) and revised through translation. For the original piece, read the article directly on their website linked down below.

  • If you would like to see a whole detailed "case study" series on Yugoslav/Balkan history and deep analysis of the historical eras I had to gloss over in this documentary, make sure to subscribe to the channel to not miss any new videos. All support on patreon.com/BalkanOdyssey is also highly appreciated!

Wow. Just wow. Beautifully done. I have never found such a clear, precise and interesting explanation of Yugoslavia. Thank you very much, comrade! Bureaucracy is quite quickly becoming one of my most hated words.
  • @bigozimak
Your comparison of Italy and Germany to the South Slavs is a very good one. If they're nation building project came relatively late, then ours completely missed the bus. We probably needed a TITO like figure 100 years earlier!

Wow this was an education. Thank you for making this video. It's so important to dispel the bourgeois mythos surrounding the breakup of Yugoslavia.
  • @carnaldnestor
This was such a clear, concise and surprisingly deep for an overview, of the modern history of the Balkans an especially Yugoslav history, in many ways I can see some similarities between the split and downfall of Yugoslavia and the process that fractured Latin America some 200 years ago. From a mexican comrade, thank you so much for this comrade!

Jer zaista lako izgubim pažnju kada ih nema.
  • Just watched - have been trying to wrap my head around this difficult and convoluted history for a while. Your video essay has helped me grasp this place/period with greater clarity. Thank you.
  • I'd like you to do a similar video on the Russian Revolution under Lenin, Trotsky & Stalin along with how it's viewed by the wider world, especially Russia 🇷🇺 and the West. I hope you (as a Marxist) can bring the nuance you always do for these things 👍🏼

Just one funny thing I remembered when you called Kingdom of Yugoslavia ''the prison cell of nations''. When our (Slovenian) writer Ivan Cankar was imprisoned at the Ljubljana castle in the old Austro-Hungary he was imprisoned because he called Austria-Hungary the prison of people/nationalities and was politicaly vocal about stopping the war with Serbian brothers and was keen on creating a new union of southern Slavs. Did I miss you mentioning the state of SHS(Slovenians, Croats and Serbs)? I know it was very short lived, before the Kingdom of Yugoslavia but I think there's more to say about it. Good video nontheless.

Thank you for the education comrade. Your compassion is noted, and your hardwork is appreciated
  • This documentary is golden, exceptionally well made and put together, glimpse into painful history and strangely tense and uncertain future of Southern Slavs. I am so grateful to you for making this documentary. This is the most insightful and accurate dissection of turbulent and, more often than not, bloody history of Balkan. Well done, and to the T analysis of ethnic, religious, hegemonic and power grab divisions along artificially created national borders, that brought nothing but misery and antagonisms between people, that share the same DNA , in this case Southern Slavs (ignorance and hate included). Somehow, I could not figure it out, as hard as I tried, WTF is the source of this mindset...born and raised in former Yugoslavia still...no luck finding the answer. Smrt Fasizmu - Sloboda Narodu! SVAKA CAST MAJSTORE !!!! 👍👍 💙🤍❤

The moral of the story is “when you rule a territory for half a millennium make sure to eliminate differences and diversity by teaching your subjects a common language, religion, and customs so that they don’t turn into ungrateful miserable creatures once you are gone.”

The only curse is the murican interference.

"They had to destroy the idea of Yugoslavia" 30+ Years later, at least 65-70% of the population of ex-Yugoslavia wants Yugoslavia back. The time shall come.
  • It is what they say about us Chechens, we are violent creatures who are not people. That is how Americans see all Muslims and how Russians portray Chechens and Chechnya

Given the history of Bulgaria and the presence in the country of a large and fairly well - to - do minority , anti - Turkism is an easy and obvious means showing the patriotism of those in power .
