What Causes Thyroid Nodules | UCLA Endocrine Center

Thyroid nodules are common and are usually detected by ultrasounds, says endocrine surgeon James Wu, MD. One of the main causes of thyroid nodules is increased age. The longer we live, the more likely some of our thyroid cells will develop abnormally into a clump of cells (nodule).

Anything that interferes with thyroid function can also cause thyroid nodules. For example, since the thyroid uses iodine to create the thyroid hormone, being iodine deficient can lead to the formation of nodules.

Studies have linked other factors to thyroid nodules including smoking, obesity and drinking alcohol.

Most thyroid nodules aren’t an issue, but it’s important to make sure a thyroid nodule isn’t interfering with your thyroid function. You should also have the nodule checked for any features suspicious for thyroid cancer.

After 3 years of weird symptoms I’m finally having a thyroid ultrasound tomorrow. I also ordered my own blood tests for: (reading off the form) - TSH - free T4 - free T3 - T3 - anti TPO - DHEA-S - progesterone - LH - FSH - cortisol - IGF 1 - prolactine - oestradiol - jodium I’ve had swollen lymph nodes for 3 years, fatigue, depression, malaise, forgetfulness, muscle/joint pain, weight gain, puffy face, nerve pain near the lymph nodes, fluid retention in legs and arms, breathlessness, ribs/chest tender to touch… the list goes on and on. I finally decided to push through when I started to get pressure near my thyroid every time I ovulated. It comes back every month and it keeps me up at night because I can’t lie down on my back. Weird things keep popping up, and my doctor thinks its anxiety. Also a side note, my mom has Hashimoto’s and rheumatoid arthritis. Is an ultrasound and these blood panels enough to diagnose me? Could it be missed? Would an MRI be helpful? I am so sick and tired of always being sick and tired. Thank you for reading ❤️

Thx a lot. My family member (aged 55) got 2cm thyroid nodule diagnosed. Heart beats normal & ECG normal. Doctor said not much to worry for now. So, we researched and made some hypothesis. One month later, it disappeared. What we assumed and did Leaky gut, autoimmune reaction. We did ABC. A// Stopped gluten. Stopped oatmeal. B// improved digestion, eg some ginger in meals C// Gut health and healing. Bone broth, the good one. Probiotics eg Yakult, and G-Niib. Every situation is different. FYR only.
  • I have multiple nodules and experienced excruciating pain over the years whenever the doctors handled my thyroid during the exam. I have since been diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis. Can you explain how an inflamed thyroid can develop nodule(s). My first nodule was discovered in my 30’s. But my thyroids sensitivity to being handled began a couple of years before it’s discovery by my physician’s exam and finally in ultrasound. I would love to understand the structure and ultimately the deconstruction of the thyroid tissue.

I had a TSH of .007. Doc ordered more tests, plus ultrasound of thyroid. Had a nodule. Maybe coincidence, but I had switched to "Pink Himalayan" salt from Costco a few years earlier, and I don't eat seafood. After the diagnosis I started eating plenty of iodized salt and my TSH went back to normal. Still had nodule on last check though.

I had an ultrasound last week because my thyroid levels are all over the place. Also having trouble swallowing, I’m sweating a lot . This all just started back in September. The ultrasound showed several nodules. The doctor said they are too small to biopsy, so they’re doing more bloodwork. I’m actually not concerned about it. Thanks for the video.

I have a small nodule that I need to get checked again next March. Thyroid levels are normal but sometimes TSH comes back low.

Can it be because of the high oxalates diet? if that is the cause for kidney stones I believe oxalate calcifications can also be the reason for thyroid nodules.
  • I'm 18 years old and about to turn 19 in this March 2024. I'm a college student, and I've noticed that I have a large and hard lump on my neck exactly where this is described as being. I haven't recognized it really up until now somehow. But it does seem to affect how I swallow. Here's hoping that it's benign and that I can get it removed without it turning out to be some form of disease.

I had partial Thyroid Lobectomy 10 years ago because of multiple nodules now the other part of the thyroid is full of nodules too. I have seen many Drs here in San Antonio, Texas and nothing, not a real treatment for Me. One Dr. said "Well it looks like you body like to produce nodules" We need Drs like you Dr James Wu. here in Texas.

Most of the iodine in iodized salt evaporates, so while it is the right idea, iodized salt loses the iodine over time.
  • Hi doctor it good or bad using iodine salt for people who have thyroid nodules. Thanks
  • @YaYaPaBla
