A 40 and an 86......fantastic footage. Trains like all things are boring now. Love this time.

When even non train enthusiast's could appreciate the engineering and workmanship that kept the country moving.
  • Good old days. I started spotting in the late 70s. Love 40s. Easy to forget how rundown the stations were in the 80s.
  • Feeling nostalgic watching this ❤️, Classic Class 40 diesel locomotion,Bring back those days when seeing and hearing these classic locomotives to other Class locos like the 26,27 ,31,33,37,47 ,50,52 ,55 and not ever forgetting the sounds of a class 40 ,love the sounds of fans looking out the windows ,Great nostalgic memories of growing up with these sort of things ,Since Privatisation to today's Generation of trains,Nothing like BR memories growing up.Miss the Whistlers when they were retired in the early 1980s 🥺😢😭makes me greet thinking about how BR Jobsworths were making decisions retiring these iconic workhorses to history and BR changing every day when blue was ruling the rails ,I would have been 10 when this was filmed,Now at 49 Feeling emotional.😭
  • You cannot beat these great machines. I wish we could have them back and not the junk we ride on today.
  • The most iconic moment of class 40 bashers ever. Thank you for this footage, it will be treasured forever. Absolutely awesome.

Fantastic stuff, was on the train that day into Manchester, can't believe it was 36 years ago. Someone hurry up and invent a time machine !!!
  • As the song says "those were the days my friend I thought they'd never end" we all took it for granted, mk1s, loco hauled trains, relief trains at bank holidays instead of cancellations or bus replacement, vacuum braked overnight trains, adex, mystery excursions, I could go on, but they did end. I did 40181 Manchester to Sheffield on that day which was 40 years ago this Summer, 2024. Thanks for posting, brings back happy memories.

Such a sad day, glad I worked on these beasts back in the day.
  • Holy sh#t that footage from Belle Vue station is amazing! I’m 52 now and I was on this train and was just a teenager. I may well have been hanging out of the window. Thank you for posting this.

When railway was run as a service for passengers and not used as a political football. And Piccadilly is an airport terminal now, the approach has been rationalised now too.
  • You know, as much as I think 40145 at the ELR is good and all that - I would swap it for this monster any day of the week. 40181 was an absolute hero and missed by so many.
