Because in the end trophies don't matter when you have family and friends who have supported you your whole life. I can't express how that moment with his wife touched me. Just imagining hugging my wife like that after retiring from such a glorious career makes my heart hurt so I can't imagine what he felt like at that moment. And that last scene where he puts the Captain's armband on the kid then makes him look at him, basically telling him "I leave this City to you. It's your responsibility now".
