How did I get a proper idea on refs?

I was drawing last-night, and had a bit of a wreck up on body-refs. But as i gotten to start drawing bugs, you know their body parts seem more separate I realized what i was doing wrong the WHOLEE time.

Basically, i got two shapes of trapezoids together and make the body, simple as that like how you make those shapes in vector forms of art or... something. I don't really know... But yeah! I managed to get it worked out so it's EZ
