Today I took my AMD-65 out to the range. I've shot regular AKMs with AMD muzzle brakes, but never had the chance to try the AMD-65 in its original proper configuration. And you know what? It's actually not bad, at least in short helpings. The brake is really concussive for people around the gun, but it's not bad at all for the shooter. The grip would get tiring after a while, but for just a bit of shooting it's not bad at all.

Thanks to Brandon Herrera / The AK Guy Inc for building this rifle for me!

Hungarians were using MLOK handguards and obnoxious muzzle devices way before it was cool. The original AK hipsters.
  • "Don't fire that thing so close to my head. I can barely hear as it is."

As a Hungarian, seeing Ian firing a hungarian gun , in a uniform made also by my country makes me extremely happy! Thank you so much!!!

The entire squad of Hungarian troops must have had elevenitis instead of tinnitus.

    A shooting video... It's been 84 years..........
  • Of course Jordan had to fire that last round. That's what friends are for!

    “Ash Ketchum used CONCUSSION BLAST”
  • Back in the 80s, my father, as a Bulgarian army serviceman, took part in a convention, held in Hungary of the Warsaw Pact military small arms producers. There were competitive shootings conducted for all the primary assault rifles of the Europe's Eastern block. The best came up the Soviet AKM, followed by the German AKM. They all complained about the Bulgarian milled receiver AK, though my dad achieved with it the highest score on the range😊 And he told me about the concussion the AMD muzzle brake caused. And it also put the resting pillow on fire while they were shooting it prone.

Served me and my unit well in the jungles of Tselinoyarsk back in '64. Unfortunately, some spy with a tranquilizer gun knocked us all out and our revolver twirling commander got hit by a motorcycle. Never really lived that down.

Technically not everybody got this within the army. I served in 2001-2002 and our base had AK-63D. You should try to get one, Ian. They are fun. It was a technical brigade. (earthmoving machines basically) You look neat in that uniform, by the way :) Cheers from Hungary

My favorite observation was that they shortened the barrel and then gave it a long obnoxious brake, bringing it back almost to the original barrel length. Definitely one of the AK’s of all time.
  • I love my custom built AMD65 with wood furniture. It has a 4.5" muzzle brake welded on to be classified as a rifle by law. Full length, improperly gassed (cheap) AK's have a stout recoil; I was shooting with another family and their daughters age 15 & 18 actually loved and said it was their favorite gun to shoot. Have had other small women say the same thing, it handles unbelievably well for a 7.62x39. Actually how I acquired it was a dude who dabbles in gun trading & historic firearms left it at my house. I proceeded to take it to the desert to test it out and was instantly blown away with how smooth & manageable it was. Needless to say I bought it over 2 years ago and the AMD65 now has a special place in my heart & collection. It's true the concussive brake doesn't affect the shooter; on the flip side whoever you are shooting at or around will hear and feel VERY powerful, loud blasts that I believe could have a psychological impact in a real life combat situation setting off a fight or flight response as they can FEEL the muzzle energy in the lungs & sinuses. Especially if you were to fire this indoors I could only imagine everyone in the room getting a TBI lol. Not to mention how many shots you can get off in a tight group up to 550-600 yards... 7.62x39 will only loose 200fps with a 11.5" barrel vs a 16" while still retaining great accuracy with the proper twist rate and gassing, I cannot emphasize how smooth this build can be if done right. The last dude I let shoot it said, "Wow if you got into a gunfight against someone with this you would be F-ed!"

Ian: "The concussion is jarring" Brandon Herrera: "Nyet, rifle is fine"

I got my AMD-65 in about 2010, I don’t think it’s ever failed to fire. One time though I forgot I wasn’t wearing ear pro and took a shot. Never again.
  • that was a great video. and we finally were able to see someone of the crew. Thank you Ian for all the countless hours of entertainment, thank you Josh for the camerawork and commentary and thank you AMD 65 for being... present

Last time I fired mine at a range, some weenies complained about the noise!
  • I have some of your books, and they are truly fantastic. I'm proud to own them.
