I understand why making a political “issue” out of abortion, which had previously always been a personal matter between a woman and her doctor, was politically expedient in the 1980s. Ronald Reagan’s political advisors urged him to employ abortion to divide voters and to harness the untapped political potential of unsophisticated, emotionally religious voters who would otherwise have voted based upon their own economic interests rather than “for the foetus” But why perpetuate this political pretext and continue to cause a lot of human suffering? Why not let abortion once again be a personal, private matter as is it in every civilized western nation in the world, but ours? It would be far kinder for neo-republicans to employ some other pretext which effectively divides voters, but does less real harm. Such as regional football rivalries? Harnessing the energy that sports fans pour into supporting their favorite sports teams instead of utilizing abortion would be societally divisive, without specifically negatively impacting women and children. The cynical GOP policy of crying “save the foetus!” only to later effectively starve the resulting babies by relentlessly cutting AFDC and Food Stamps funding whenever possible, policies which specifically target poor people, only reflects the “christian” character of the legislators who advance such policies.
