If you're seeing this, then let me do some clarification since there appears to be a large amount of confusion. Every 1472 days, (about 15 years), steam locomotives must undergo an Federal Railroad Administration mandated boiler disassembly/inspection. These inspections are a form of preventative maintenance that prevents the locomotive from having a boiler explosion, among other things. The Oregon Rail Heritage Center deeply cares for their locomotives, and I would highly doubt that they’d get rid of her. This inspection/rebuild for 4449 was completed in 2015-16. As of 2022, 4449 has been on display at the ORHC, with occasional runs. For those wondering why she doesn’t run special excursions anymore, it’s due to 3 main reasons. 1. 4449 doesn’t have Positive Train Control, which is an FRA requirement for all mainline trains, 2. Amtrak is not willing to supply HEP equipment, and 3. Freight railroads do not want to accommodate another train on their tracks that isn't theirs. (Money reasons of course.) 4449 also doesn't run the holiday train as much either due to the Oregon Pacific Railroads track quality. OPRs track is rated for lighter switching locomotives, not a 475,000 pound 4-8-4. I’ll admit yes, its sad that she doesn't run much anymore for one reason or another. But that's not to say that she isn't cherished by the ORHC and railfans alike.
