This short video was my first test of my three main operating modes on the Xiegu X6100 (SSB, CW, and FT8). The radio performed flawlessly and it is certainly an excellent radio to own, especially for you POTA, SOTA, WWFF, and portable operators. There are some more bugs for the Xiegu to work out, but I am really satisfied with my purchase. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video. I just installed the open source firmware from R1CBU. That firmware is excellent and definitely worth trying out. It boots off the card and will revert back to Xiegu's firmware when the card is removed and the radio is turned back on. Thanks again for a great video.

I also have an IC 705, and for portable hf I much prefer my x6100. Yes, it has a few bugs and issues that need to be resolved but in general, these things do not get in the way of making fantastic and regular contacts with the radio. In my opinion, the x6100 is the closest thing to a perfect HF qrp portable radio that we've seen yet. It's not perfect, no, but it's fantastic all the same.

  • Tnx for the nice Video, i think to buy the x6100. 73 from Germany.
  • X6100 with November 2022 firmware works very well and there is much less noise.
  • Paul great video. Enjoyed your tests on SSB, CW, and FT8. I'm quite hesitant about getting a X6100 most due to the heat issue. What are your thoughts ?

Hi Paul what you think about this radio as a base station? For DX? Forget about the "power problem" always can add an amp. But I mean about the radio itself.. about filters , performance... I also heard that speakers sound do nto sound good.. but always can buy external speakers. Give me a feedback please.
  • Paul, from what supplier did you find the heat sink you were showing on the screen? Gerald KG0VA
  • Thanks for the video, i just have a question, on CW Training mode is it possible to see what you're keying on the display?
  • @DadeCityBlog
What is the Firmware version? I have the latest and the CW MSG function plays, but will not go into transmit.

it gets hot.. use the heat sink.. i added the amazon purchased 2 heat sinks that together look like the size of your one you showed. looking to add more 14mm x 14mm heat sinks at the bottom of the case to further draw heat away. I do POTA on SSB as an activator... last night did over 100 sqo in 2 hrs..(at 4w internal battery then into my PAX100 amp giving 80-100w out)...it was less hot with heat sink..but still hot..wonder how long our internal batteries will survive in this rig... my other rig is a G90... the only other unit I own and used for over 10K qsos last year on POTA.. G90 (with installed fan/hence more power draw) is cool after 3 hrs POTA..so.. X6100.. we'll have to see (also don't run CHARGE while on external power.. really heats up)..I am a 1 week owner so far...we' all learning together.. so thanks for you great video. I love my X6100... can wait to try some hacks like re-flash with built in digi modes, no external PC needed..will use it on my POTA activations with the PAX100 vs the G90 now.. smaller, more portable.
  • Hi Paul, great video thanks. Would you say that the X6100 is more noisy on receive than the G90 using SSB ?

Does the CW decoder work well. It seemed to put out a lot of TTT. Is this normal.
  • I would love to see you do that exchange with the paddle I saw on the desk. I know you could have done that short exchange perfectly! Seven three (never seventy three) de Kevin
