Rare behind-the-scenes access to the Taliban spokesman as local Afghans confront him about the failed economy and broken promises of women’s and minority rights.

With unprecedented access from Kandahar to Kabul, the Taliban’s main spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid opens the doors to the presidential palace. He takes us to the centre of the Taliban’s transition from rebel fighters to the nation’s leaders.

Charged with orders from the Taliban’s reclusive supreme leader, Mullah Haibatullah Akhunzada, Mujahid faces the stresses that come with governing a divided and traumatised country of 40 million people. In Afghanistan, human rights are under attack and the economy is crumbling.

Powerful businessmen, bold Hazara leaders and a fearless woman activist confront Mujahid about the Taliban’s many unfulfilled promises. He knows the stakes are high for an administration which is not formally recognised by the rest of the world.

Taliban Palace is a documentary film by Michael Healy and Najibullah Quraishi.

I actually served in Afghanistan from 07-09 with the US Army. It is such a beautiful country with hard working people. I lost several friends over there flighting with the Taliban and now I agree.....Peace. There was no reason for us to be over there for that long. Obviously I was there as a soldier and at war but someday I hope to return and travel the country in a peaceful manner and visit where my brothers died.

I was really surprised that people come to him and openly criticise and show dissatisfaction to him and he listens very calmly! Really impressive!

I am Pashtun from Pakistan and I understood the language Zabiullah Mujahid spoke in the documentary. I have noticed that the reporter did not mention exactly what he said, especially in favor of women. For example, at 6:13, he stated, 'First, we need to create a safer environment for women.' He emphasized that there is no hostility against women but rather a focus on the dignity and respect that Islam teaches us towards women. The reporter completely omitted the part regarding women's rights. It appears that Al Jazeera either missed it or deliberately chose not to mention it.
  • Prosperity , peace , progress, and happiness to the country and people of Afghanistan …joy from Philippines 🇵🇭

After all the pain and suffering I just wish peace and prosperity to Afghanistan’s people
  • That woman fought so hard and passionately for her daughters to have a right to education, knowing it would probably just be brushed off. It must be so frustrating.

  • No matter what and how anyone sees these people. They are the most resilient people on earth. Watch and see how they would grow.

Spokesperson is such a gem of a person. Sadness, dilemma, honesty , empathy and the desire for the good of his country but his helplessness, everything is in his eyes.

Wow, mad respect to that lady who is fighting for women's right to education. This is the definition of an uphill battle. Her determination and resilience against overwhelming odds are impressive. She is fighting for her fellow women, and ultimately for all the people of Afghanistan, although she might not live long enough to see her goals being achieved. Amazing.

Can you imagine a person with this influence is this humble to his people and so transparent that he’s letting the world to see the government’s criticism in front of him.
  • @abcxyz9783
Humble behavior wins hearts. The old lady was fiercely angry before she met the spokesperson, but after he made her smile at the end of the meeting, she came out looking more at peace.

Being at war for more than 40 years there could be many issues in their govt but they are settling it out in a humble way. Loved this 22:27 “May God find more mothers like you who force us to give them their rights”
