The 3 Sons of Zeus so Powerful Reality Itself Wouldn't Let Them Live

Hey everyone, welcome to Mythology Explained. In today’s video, we’re going to discuss the three sons of Zeus who, had they reached adulthood and grown into the full potential of their power, would have become more powerful than their father, who would have succeeded Zeus, either claiming the crown by force or ascending to the throne with their father’s blessing. And interestingly, as we’ll explore momentarily, it actually seems as if prophecy - reality itself, even, looked at one way - contrived to keep Zeus enthroned, ensconced up high in lofty Olympus. First, we’re going to go over how the fortune of fate stacked the deck in Zeus’s favor, and then we’re going to go over the three children who would have been more powerful than him.

Alright, Let’s get into it.

Prophecy in Greek mythology is almost always something inexorable, meaning it can’t be prevented once proclaimed. There are rare exceptions to this, and in general, gods have more wiggle room than mortals, able to manipulate and maneuver to a limited extent where humanity is just along for the ride with no agency. For Zeus, the flexibility of fate is even greater. No other has more autonomy than he in authoring how events play out, and for this reason, one of his appellations is Zeus Moiragetes, ‘Zeus Master of Fate’. In fact, the interplay between Zeus and prophecy makes it look as though the cosmos conspired to crown him king and then keep him king - prophecy first obdurate, this working to facilitate Zeus’ ascension to the throne, then obedient, allowing Zeus to forestall fate and continue to rule forever unchallenged.

  • Gotta love putting in the single most horrifying picture of Saturn devouring his sons.

The denial of fatherhood was so intense that reality itself bent so the kids weren't real 😂 DEADBEAT!

Actually Heracles after he ascended to full godhood was slightly stronger than Zeus. They wrestled to a draw in the Olympics, now Zeus had much more experience so Heracles must have had a physical edge. Although as far as overall POWER goes,Zeus was still unmatched and Heracles lacked power behind brute force. So Heracles, having matched him and being the God of Strength must have been a bit stronger, but in overall power Heracles was a minor diety. Poseidon was the second most powerful and he even said Zeus the strongest by far, although some sort of small parrity is implied between the Big 3 Heracles has fought Poseidon and it was a stalemate cause Poseidon used his power while Heracles was throwing boulders at him. Zagreus on the other hand would have been far superior to Zeus in every way and had much more potential than even Heracles who had more potential than the Gods Ares is kind of a loser who has been implied to have the potential to be dangerous one day if he stops having no control and being reckless and foolish. Zeus once stated Ares would one day grow to be his undoing. The question will always be if Zeus has truly avoided Fate or has he merely post poned it? Greek myths arent made anymore and we cant know. And perhaps its best we never find out. But if i was forced to choose i would say that Zeus has merely delayed the inevitable. One day the prochecy will he fullfiled, perhaps however not in the manner Zeus fears.

Greek myths show the gods to be so controlled by fate, whereas in Sumerian myth its a baseline power for the gods to manipulate fate to its fullest extent. Arguably the control of fate is more potent than any number of lightning bolts that you could ever throw, as it could be fated that those lightning bolts may ricochet and strike you down instead, so controlling that likelihood is by far the greatest strength of the Sumerian pantheon

The parallells between Zagrius and Thor are interesting. Its like an alternate timeline.
