It's common for a nation to adopt a new flag from time to time, but exactly how common is this? Here, I explore every single alteration to a national flag in the twenty-first century and discover the rate in which these flags change in the modern day.

I have an dictionary for kids from 2006 that has a section for flags of the world and most of the flags showed in this video are there, and back in time Libya's flag always stood out to me and my friends, it is so simple, yet so iconic Also in this dictionary the flag of Angola is the 2003 proposal, it looks similar to Costa Rica's flag, but the red stripe is bigger and it has a sun in the middle, i read that they never used this flag, so i don't know why it's there
  • To add context to the Comoros flag: The four stripes added represent the islands of the archipelago, just like the four stars. Yellow for Mohéli, white for Mayotte, red for Anjouan and blue for Grande Comore. Mayotte is a French overseas department but are claimed by the Comoros as theirs. The reason why Mayotte remains French is because the island rejected independence twice in 1974 and 1976. And in 2009, the island voted in favor of becoming a department. Mayotte has a stronger link to France than the rest of the Comoros because they were French for far longer, as it became French in 1841, who repopulated it and made the island a sugar island. The others became French in 1886. The design of the flag of Georgia dates back to the 12th century as a coin of the King David the Builder with it was discovered in late 2021. It also appeared as the flag of Tbilisi on a 14th century map by Domenico and Francesco Pizzigano. The Kingdom of Georgia lasted from 1008 to 1490. After the fight for independence from the Soviets, the flag was used in the early 2000s by the main opposition party, the United National Movement led by Mikheil Saakashvili, as a symbol of popular resistance to Shevardnadze's rule (a rule marked by rampant corruption) as well as a symbol of the Rose Revolution. So when Shevardnadze resigned and Saakashvili won in a snap election, he endorsed the flag.

Great video! Would you ever make one for 1980-2000?
  • Some of your best work! Thank you for so much for covering such an informative topic!

7:37 I'm Ecuadorian, and I never knew that my country has changed its flag 😮, there aren't too many differences in the new flag 🇪
  • Turkmenistan is one of my favorite flags because while I typically like a simpler flag, I make an exception for certain flags that look cool because of it being more complex, and Turkmenistan is one of them. There are five stars on the Turkmen flag to represent both the five regions of the country (Ahal, Lebap, Mary, Balkan, and Daşoguz) and the Five Pillars of Islam. A carpet is on the hoist side to signify the historic Turkmen carpet industry. There are five different designs for the five major Turkmen tribes, which from top to bottom are the Teke, Yomut, Saryk, Chowdur, and Ersari. The olive branches at the bottom were added in 1997 to represent peace as Turkmenistan became a neutral country in 1995. And regarding the East Timor/Timor Leste flag, even though the official flag is supposed to have a slanted star, an interesting fact is the flag flown during the independence ceremony in 2002 had a straight star despite the clear specifications and also had an aspect ratio of 1:2. The East Timor flag was designed by Natalino Leitão (who died when Indonesia invaded) was based off the flag of Fretilin which was the dominant party at the time of their original independence in 1975, and it has been assumed that the flag was also inspired by Cuba and Mozambique as Fretilin had sympathies for FRELIMO and their fight for Mozambique independence from Portugal, and Che Guevara.

I'm Italian, and I completely forgot that, for 3 years, our flag had a different shade of green. To be fair, I was 10 to 13 in those years, so I doubt I would have noticed/cared about it

I liked these kind of videos keep making these

Afghanistan can't decide which flag to use
  • @Ihavenoidea-dm3wd
"How many times would you like to change your flag?" Afghanistan: yes
  • @Nelson_504
I'm from Honduras, and I watched the whole vid to see our change not knowing it's the most recent one.😅 I'm glad I I did, though. Such an interesting video.👍👏
  • @martychisnall
Technically all the ones that just specify the colours don’t count as changes, because they’re retroactively saying that was always what the flag was supposed to look like.

Such a great educational video! ❤🎉 Edit: And also I wasn't even expecting a lot of countries to change!
