I totally agree! The electric eraser is the crown jewel of tools for the graphite, charcoal, or pastel artist. I have been using this priceless little gem for more than 15 years. I always keep several on hand and have recently found one that allows the choice of the standard electric eraser size or the micro size. Before discovering this new version, I would sharpen the standard eraser by holding it at an angle on a piece of paper while pressing the on button. I no longer have to take the time to do that…for even finer lines and details, I simply switch over to my micro electric eraser. As a realistic artist, I find this tool absolutely takes my art to the next level! What’s even better is the price point is extremely affordable. I never view these tools as erasers, but as actual drawing tools. Erasing (a mistake) on a drawing is highly not recommended as it usually causes damage to the paper which alters the way the paper receives the graphite or charcoal. I try, as much as possible, to utilize mistakes as part of the character of the drawing. As a musician, I apply the same approach with my music and encourage my students to do so as well. They are not really accidents, but opportunities for creativity.

Stunning work! I really enjoyed hearing you explain your process and how the eraser helps. I've seen them used by watercolorist and graphite artists, but seeing it used on this large-scale charcoal was very interesting. It makes perfect sense!

Fantastic work! Please show how to fix and roll such a large piece by post? Do you prepare your paper in any way before starting and what paper is your favourite?
  • Beautifully done! I would love to see you do a drawing on black paper with white charcoal. I think that would be an amazing video 😁
