Welcome to Dumpit Diary episode 1. I've been given a Peugeot 106, and I'm trying to see just how cheaply I can run it. Could I even run it for free?!

In this video:

0:00 Intro
1:37 First repairs
12:43 Summary & budget update

This is the second video on Dumpit, and the first I filmed.

Confused? Yeah, I would be too.

You need to factor in the cost of fresh Stanley blade as well. 🤨

The cheapo stalk is something to be proud of, something to cherish and celebrate; it keeps Dumpit alive!

I once had a Xantia indicator stalk fail in a similar way but managed to repair it. Reassembling it however did take up most of a very frustrating Sunday afternoon, with tiny springs and contacts pinging round the room until I found the trick of getting it back together in one piece. If someone had offered me a replacement stalk for £16.99 at that point I probably would have taken it!

Good to see a series about a car being run on a budget 👍 I'd much rather keep that going than have something new on finance...

Enjoying Dumpit on the cheap series. Quite fancy a Dumpit tea mug to add to "the collection". 😄
  • The Dumpit Diary videos are great! Little modern "classic" car being run on a budget. It's going to be interesting to follow the Dumpit Diaries.Looking forward to the next one Mr Kitch. Keep up the great work!
  • I live in the US. My current cost champion is a 2015 Prius C (like a Yaris hybrid, but a little longer wheelbase). In 9 years or 150,000 miles it has cost $400 in repairs and runs me around $50 to 60 a month in fuel for roughly 1,000 miles. With insurance in Florida (most expensive state for it) it runs me around $200 per month in total running costs.

I had a phase 1 diesel, non working heater and non locking doors but it was brilliant, unstoppable in snow. Loved that car
  • I love economy cars and I really like your videos. None of them have been boring so far. Watching your videos about (car related) everyday life is wellness to my mind and my soul. Carry on, Kitch. And thank you! See you soon --- Martin from Germany 🚗💨🇫🇷
  • whatever you may say cheap French cars are the best. our 306 has the same stork issue however we can't find a replacement so our solution is to press the hazard button quarter way and for some odd reason triggers the left turning signal. we love your videos love from south Africa
  • In 2017 I bought a 1992 Pug 205 diesel as a daily driver that I had for 2 years. Did 45mpg around SE London and 55-60mpg on a run. I paid £300 for it, did the cambelt, tensioners water pump, rear brake shoes and a couple of oil changes, before getting £2000 scrappage from SadIQ Khan. Felt really bad scrapping it, but an old lady had driven in to the drivers side a few months previously and there was no way I was going to match the paint. Got over my guilt with a Jaguar XJ X350 that puts out 3x the CO2 whilst being compliant with ridiculous rules set by the short man, which I still enjoy today.

Keep your eye on Euro car parts. They quite often do oil and air filters for less than £1. Spark Plugs are very cheap. Ok so it's not free but very cheap. Had my 2002 106 independence for 4.5 years and easily the best car I have owned. Sunroof drains can block leading to puddles in the footwells, inner rings rot but aside from that, mine has been bomb proof

Brilliant! I love Dumpit even more now I can see how little everything costs!

I've had 3 106s, a brand new 92K phase 1 1.1XT 3dr which was written off by a blind OAP when it was only 2 years old. Turns out bright red cars are still invisble at traffic lights, who knew! Then a 1996 phase 2 1.6XS in white which despite being a mere 6 months old and "Peugeot Approved" at the time turned out to be a complete dog that had been badly repaired (no Car Vertical back then). That one was eventually replaced by pre-registered but as new 1998 XS in Rallye blue which I part-chopped for a Scenic 1.9 DTi in 1999 and lost an absolute fortune on. Or at least, at the time it seemed like a fortune because the car only cost £8000 and I got £6500 for it after running it for a year. That Scenic cost £14,000 brand new which I thought was crazy money and was the first time I'd financed a car. 3 years at 0%, Heady times. I really want another 106 before they're all too far gone to run as a summer car. The breaker for me is I don't like the sunroofs and solid roofed cars aren't too common now, such was Peugeot's love affair with limited editions and the perceived need to "add pizazz" by cutting a hole in the roof and gluing in the up and over window. Enjoy.

I've only once had to replace a stalk, (I was resetting the trip with my arm through the wheel when a numpty forced me to swerve and I could not extract my arm in time). It was a Lancia Beta in 1978, it cost me £30. I've just checked the BofE inflation calculator and in todays money that's about £160. It might have been cheaper to hit the numpty.
  • Be still my beating heart, can I truly cope with these levels of excitement on a Wednesday? 😂👏👍
