The Wirral Line Driver's eye view Preview

Published 2013-02-28
www.video125.co.uk is where you can order the Wirral Line Driver's eye view on DVD or Blu-ray. The City of Liverpool is served by Merseyrail, a suburban rail network unique in many ways and subdivided into two main routes: The Northern Line and the Wirral Line.

We travel over the latter on board third rail class 507 and 508 electric multiple units. While the Northern Line serves the Liverpool side of the Mersey, the Wirral Line runs beneath the wide river separating Liverpool from Birkenhead and the Wirral Peninsula. The Wirral Line consists of two main routes with four branches covering a route mileage of 33 miles.

We see all four branches from the Driver's cab in virtual real time. CHESTER to LIVERPOOL CENTRAL, HOOTON to ELLESMERE PORT, LIVERPOOL CENTRAL to WEST KIRBY & BIRKENHEAD NORTH to NEW BRIGHTON.

Highlights include the 19th century river tunnel with its 1 in 27 gradient which we see in both directions along with the 20th century single loop line. The majority of the Wirral Line is signalled from the IECC signalling centre at Sandhills and Video 125 cameras were there to follow our trains from a signallers point of view.

BONUS: Liverpool was all about the myriad of docks facing the River Mersey, all of which were rail connected. Included is a unique archive film showing these docks in full swing taken from an electric train running on the famous Liverpool Overhead Railway just a few years before the system was shut and dismantled.

It certainly includes Canada Dock and Gladstone Dock.
  • Several inaccuracies in the the full version of this. Bromborough Rake opened on 30th September 1985 and Eastham Rake opened 10th April 1995.

The DEVs are now in stock on DVD (Blu-ray one week on). VIDEO125.TV is initially going to be for productions that are no longer available on disc. Inevitably, over time, we will look at other productions. There are no plans to offer our latest titles as downloads.

They have cut bits out of the real DVD. If you buy it, you can get the full ride.
  • @michaeldelz
hi there, does the overhead sequence continue on from Huskisson dock station shown on the preview to the next station on the DVD?
  • @michaeldelz
sorry what I mean is does the archive footage shown continue from where it is shown for a while or is it cut in the same place as in the preview? reason is that particular stretch is very interesting to us as a we are building a replica model of that particular stretch and it would be very helpful if so
  • Why can you not do the northern line for merseyrail. It would be cool to see the tube shaped tunnel they run in from Liverpool Central to sandhills. I live on the northern line in bootle and if I travel on merseyrail I go to bootle new strand and go to Southport or Liverpool Central and I enjoy it
  • @video125com
There are no plans to do any other Merseyrail branches.

Getting on these trains always makes me sad. It’s so obvious from the grand railway buildings that they were built when people gave a shit and Britain was great. But now days you see some swamp rat in a tracksuit stood there trying to look threatening. I just find the contrast sad.
  • Why did you only upload a few random clips why couldn't you upload all of the ride
