What's amazing is that she wrote this when she was 21. This is the extended recording from later. It's phenomenal.
  • Her constantly repeating that she remembers it makes me wonder how much gaslighting was involved in the end of the relationship.

This song now holds the record for longest song to ever hit #1 on the billboard charts beating American Pie (8 min 42 seconds) who held the record for almost 50 years.
  • “Cause in this city's barren cold i still remember the first fall of snow and how it glistened as it fell i remember it all too well” that line always Makes me tear up.its just the way how she sing it😭💔

I feel like this whole thing is you scolding Jake unknowingly 😅

She really is s very good songwriter and this is why she has a lot of fans. I am 77 yrs old but I love her and I have seen her when she perforned in Miami years ago with my daughter. Now she is really, really big and is still relatable and nice to her fans.

Idk if anyone shared this but Taylor said she wrote this in one sitting and was just venting and this all came out of her mouth. Her mom said please tell me you were voice recording that! And they were lol and she shortened it for the first version and so grateful we got the original 10 min version now.

When she talks about her dad saying "it's supposed to be fun turning 21" she is referring back to a song The Moment I Knew on her Red album which relays how he promised to come to her 21st birthday party and never showed - never told her he wasn't coming. Most of her discography is all related - she refers back to things in other songs and when you get to know her story they all mean so much more.
  • "So casually cruel in the name of being honest" is one of my favorite lines from her

I got to sing this live with 73,000 people in Pittsburgh last weekend and I will never forget those 10 mins

My 10 year old Son heard you say "Taylor Swift is good" & without missing a beat says "we already knew that" 😂😂😂 He is a major Taylor fan especially her Reputation album.
  • First and foremost Taylor Swift is a poet. That’s what I feel she’ll be most remembered for 100 years from now.
  • I’ll echo the recommendations of dear John and wouldve could’ve should’ve (in that order!!) she wrote dear John when she was 19, after breaking up with John Mayer (who was 32) and then WCS last year when she was 32, now the age he was when they dated, reflecting. It’s a masterclass in storytelling both times. Also if you want one where she was the “bad guy” in the relationship check out Back to December! She knows when she’s owed an apology, but she also knows when she owes an apology. A hard lesson to learn!

She plays that entire song on the guitar at every show of her tour, every weekend! It’s unreal! I never thought about the paper like you described it! Always love getting a new way of thinking of the lyrics from other people reacting to it! I’m so glad you enjoyed it.

“You kept me like a secret but i kept you like an oath” punched me in the heart
  • there is nothing better than a masterpiece and a great listener, thank u for doing this!
  • I’m lovinggg seeing the hater to swiftie pipeline from so many people lately! She really isn’t given enough credit for her talent, because the way the media has portrayed her. I’ve been a fan since ‘06! The very beginning, and I’ve always been teased and I was straight up bullied in middle school for loving her so much. I went to the Eras Tour in Nashville & she is incredible live, she’s such an amazing performer.

The outro is like the feeling of memories fading, but still there, lurking in the depths. Waiting to emerge again... so good!

The soft, repeating "I was there, I was there" at the end breaks my heart every time. Breakups are so hard to get past and you kind of never quite completely do. I felt this one so hard.

For me, the line "I'll forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to" hit SO hard because I would literally keep myself so busy that I would never think about him until I did and when I did, I always romanticized our times together. I magically didn't remember any of the messed up things he did that caused me to leave in the first place. Then I would inevitably go back to him just to end up broken all over again and repeat the cycle. Also, to your point about repetition being hell, Taylor has quoted a saying that's something to the effect of "let your heart remain breakable, but never by the same hand twice" which I believe to be just such stellar advice for not just romantic relationships but friendships and familial relationships.
