In a recent investor call, Yves Guillemot of Ubisoft referred to the upcoming Live Services game Skull and Bones as "Quadruple A". Because of such a bold statement, I decided to provide a traditional old SidAlpha style review of the Beta Gameplay.

When game's selling point is "This is a game"

If I recall correctly, Callisto protocol was also advertised as AAAA. We know how it ended. I smell the same here. Dead on arrival.

The term AAAA is correct if you consider that it screws you over 25% more than AAA. The math checks out on this one.

Let me know when Ubisoft makes a AAA game, and I will believe in a AAAA.

I watched my friend play, there were more loading screens than gameplay

I suppose I'll have to put ubisoft's words to work and juts get used to not owning this game

All they needed to do was cut out the Assassin stuff from Black Flag, make a pirate story, had made it years ago, and kept it single-player with their usual bullshit at the time and the game would have printed money with little effort since they had a blueprint right there. Why Ubisoft faffed about for years allowing them to become the late comers to a niche they had accidentally discovered a market for is mindblowing.

Now, now, Sid, don't be this harsh, it is a Quadruple A game, after all: Almost An Acceptable Application

I loved that Yves said 'in the long run.' It's like he's acknowledging the fact that none of Ubisoft's games are ever released in a completed state.

This isn't even the first time someone has described a game as "quadruple A": remember The Callisto Protocol? That was ridiculous hot air too.

Having played the closed beta of Skull & Bones, it's uh... A game. [Edit] Let me explain (this is based on my time from CBT so it may have changed), this game really doesn't have much going for it; a huge chunk if your time is spent gathering resources or sailing. Ships are one of three archetypes: Support, Tank and DPS. I didn't try support so I can't comment DPS class, however, was way too squishy and offered no discernible damage difference to a tank class while having (I think) 1/3rd (maybe 1/2?) the hp of a tank ship of equivalent size. Yes, there are multiple ship sizes as well, starting with your little pontoon boat (which its only advantage is it can fit in places the larger ships can't) to Small, medium and eventually large size ships. The ONLY positive I can really give this game is as you sail around and not in combat, your crew will randomly sing sea shanties.

No basebuilding, no clan based pirate haven building, no sword fighting, no melee combat, no hand held weapons combat, no land exploration, no farming, no animals to hunt, no shipwreck diving, no stealth, and - no Governor's daughter to romance. What did they do for TEN YEARS ? They included none of the basic features !
  • @HellKnightX88
It's hilarious to me that they're releasing this over 10 years after Black Flag, completely missing the time window where this would've made a big impact, and with less features and gameplay systems than Black Flag. And then they call it a AAAA game, ask full price for it on top of the GAAS BS monetization that they'll have in the game. They just keep digging that hole...

    "Live-Service Game" - Definition; A 'free-to-play' game you pay full-price for.
