Welcome back to another exciting episode of A Day in the Life on Heroes Next Door! This week, our host Mike Borrello, an experienced Paramedic and Firefighter, takes you behind the scenes to a drill night at his local volunteer fire station. A huge thank you to the Wagontown Fire Department for allowing us to film this crucial training session.

In this part 2 of a multi-date vehicle rescue training, you'll see our dedicated volunteers working under the guidance of skilled instructors. Watch as they meticulously cut cars, vans, and SUVs apart to learn how to gain access to potentially injured persons trapped inside. Remember, this is a training exercise, so you might witness some mistakes. Rest assured, these were addressed but not shown in the video.

We encourage constructive feedback, so if you have any suggestions to enhance their techniques, please comment below. Just a reminder to be respectful - our volunteers sacrifice their personal time and risk their safety for the community.

Can you try to do a station tour of a NY city fire department?

Each year one of the local FDs does a kids day at main FD Station 😊 the local tow/ wreaking yard donation of old car's to show the kids up close and sadly how it's done. The wrecking yard puts the cars together using a forklift. Then puts a propane torch inside to demo putting out a car fire. The engine 🚒 comes in from a block away. A Chief narrator is talking to all the kids the whole time. Then they show an auto extraction, cutting tool demo. They lift a person off the FD roof with the ladder truck in Stokes basket. The local Ambulance company gives away bikes and neat big toys.😊

Can’t help but notice an obvious slow down in videos. Is it because of lack of stations offering tours or is life just catching up?
  • How are the new firefighters supposed to learn to cut vehicles apart when the instructors did the majority of the cutting for them?

Now days you have electric cars. Airbags mounted all over. Lots going on these days. Above all remember Mike is showing us volunteers getting hands on training. We all have to learn! A lot of EMS and the Fire Service in this country is provided by volunteers. Volunteerism is dying in America. These are your neighbors or friends taking the time to learn skills and enhance the abilities of their Fire Department as a whole.
