Had a bad experience with my drone on Carnival Mardi Gras. They confiscated it like is their policy but then refused to give it to me in Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos, saying that they were told by guest services or the port authority (I got different stories) that drones were not allowed there.

I'm a drone guy, too. But it's their boat.

thanks for sharing your experience, hope clarification is made about drones with cruise ships

I've taken a drone on four NCL cruises, they do not allow drones. Getting it on the ship........ pack it in a bag that will be checked, NOT a carry on. Getting it off the ship while is port is the easy part since they don't check what is going off. Getting it back on is a different story since they X-ray everything coming back on. This is where you need to get really creative. I carry a backpack every time I leave the ship. Sometimes I'll have my snorkel gear with me in another bag. The trick is to separate all of the parts of the drone package. Don't have the drone, controller, batteries all together. I will wrap the drone in a small towel, in that towel I will have an action camera like a gopro or DJI action. The more stuff you have around the drone the harder it will be for anyone to tell what it is. If you do get stopped play dumb, they will ask you to take out some of the contents. Go in your bag a remove the action camera, etc... show them that. They will most likely wave you thru.

The country may not have a problem with drones, but the cruise company may.

Thats the same BS they told me!! i just got off the Mardi Gras and the only port they let me take it off was PR. No Amber Cove and no Grand Turk

Ugh. Dude, most cruises either don't allow drones on or check them in with the security officer. You were in the wrong and didn't realize it.

Take your drone with you on carry on. I haven’t had issues so far.
  • The policy states that drones are allowed on board and must be checked in with security and can be checked out at each port but mardi gras refused to let us have it at any port. I think mardi gras didn't follow their own policy but it's so frustrating when you pay this much for a vacation and haul luggage for a drone and have it refused. I've heard other cruise lines follow policy better or even other ships within carnival. Such a bummer.

I would think that when the ship is docked or anchored at a port, flying from the fantail would not cause a problem. Especially if the drone stays approximately over the ship….🤷🏻‍♂️ So much drama……

I am going to the Bahamas with carnival. I dont plan to fly it there. I plan to fly it in miami.. will they just hold it until i get back to miami???
  • Thanks for the info.. i think the best thing is I do not bring in my drone .. that’s sucks 😢.

So it just seems like its a total bad idea to bring one in general? I am going on a cruise in July and planned on bring my DJI Mini but after some research finding this makes me not want to bring it at all!
