A female giant Pacific octopus only has one chance at breeding in her five-year lifespan. When she's ready lay her eggs — up to 80,000 of them — she finds a rocky den and settles down for a long wait.
It can take 6-10 months for the baby octopus' to develop, and during that time, the female won't leave their side. She won't eat, but will protect the eggs and fan them to keep them oxygenated and free from bacteria and algae as she slowly dies, making the ultimate sacrifice for her babies.

Rest in peace octo mommy 😭😭😭😭😭
-
Is that why the octopus from finding nemo only had a dad and not a mom... SAD
-
This is so sad. Poor creature gives her life for her babies. It's amazing how selfless she is, but now I'm crying
-
A mother's love knows no bounds. RIP Octomom.
-
And now, I appreciate the beauty of this amazing Animal. I am sad. 😕

"Be free and live happily my love"-Mother Octopus 😢
-
There should be a warning sign: the content may cause crying... This is so beautifull and sad. And shows the power of maternal insticts to perserve the species
-
Everyone talking about how sad it is, be happy, she accomplished her goal, her young, live, they get the start their lives it's all she wanted all she sacrificed for, her babies, it should be celebrated, not mourned, her goal accomplished, her mission complete and she can now rest.
-
I just wonder how they always get such incredible footage.

Octo mom give away her life to bring babies to life and human moms spend entire life dedicated to her kids keeping their interests first and sacrifices her likes and priorities .Nothing is bigger than a Mother ❤️🔥🙌🏻

It’s enough to make a grown man cry. And that’s perfectly okay. 😰😭

Happy Momma's Day, The Great Mother Octopus! ❤️❤️❤️
-
Great mini-documentary. It makes you wonder if the mothers would eat if provided food while roosting their eggs. I wonder just how smart octopi would become if they could pass on information to their young like humans do. One could say that the information we pass onto our young is a part of what makes humans (and other animals who do such things) so smart. Octopi are already extremely intelligent and, again, I wonder just how much smarter they could become if they too could participate in the lives of their young.

It’s so beautiful and noble! She makes the ultimate sacrifice for her babies and her species. Makes ya wanna give her a hug. 🤗 (before she’s in her pregnancy cycle:)
-
That's what you call a devoted mother caring for her young
-
I have always loved the Octopus, because of its amazing life. Seeing this for the first time really made me cry. Thank you for showing.
-
She don't even touched them to show her love, she immediately pushed them in out of rock. So beautiful
-
Moms are moms. I am still lucky I can still talk and hug my mom.
-
I am feeling sad😢 that she won't be able to see her kids playing and swimming (just humanly feeling). She would be devoid of child love but still she sacrificed her life to secure kids future. That only mom can do.!💞❤️

It seems that the tiny baby octopus is saying , "Good bye Mommy..." and Mommy is tearing up with a deep sigh, slowly dying with a smile.
