Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Modi emigrated with his family to the United States at the age of seven and was raised on Long Island. Modi has played himself on HBO's Crashing and Netflix's When Jews Were Funny. He's also appeared in several feature films and played leading roles in two: Waiting for Woody Allen, which won the LA Film Festival, and Stand Up, a feature-length film. In 2018, Mayor Bill De Blasio declared June 26th 'Mordechi Modi Rosenfeld Day' in the city of New York for his accomplishments and contributions to the artistic community.

Very religious couples, like my wife and I, use an opaque wedding veil. The pictures don't come out so nice but the unspoken message is powerful. The marriage takes effect when the groom put the ring on the Bride and says "with this ring you are sanctified to me under the law of Moses and Israel". At that moment he can't see her face and she can't see the ring. He's marrying her for her not for her looks. She's marrying him for him, not for his money.

I've heard that the ל in מזל stands for "לעשות" - to do. You need to also act the right way once you're in the right place and the right time.

My wife was recommended by a cousin who's husband dabbles in matchmaking. She set us up on a hunch. They contacted my parents and her parents and got the ball rolling. It worked, apparently.

Wonderful. So here is what I learned in Rabbinic School . . . The Mishnah teaches: Ha’isha niknate b’shlosha drachim. A woman/wife is acquired in three ways. By a shtar (document/ketubah), the exchange of something of value (now a ring, but didn’t have to be), and beiah (physical knowledge/intimacy/sex). The rabbis argued is the marriage sealed with a shtar, ring, AND sexual intimacy? Or is the marriage sealed with a shtar OR a ring Or sexual intimacy? They decided on the former - it had to be all three.

Kesef - money, shtar - contract, bia - sex. Some say also chuppah which means either canopy, being alone in a room together, or being in bed together. We do all of the above on the wedding day/ night.
