Starting my iRacing journey... is rookies this hard for you guys?!

Published 2022-07-27
Get in my head as I start my iRacing career, albeit in a very disappointing fashion. I finally have the sim in working order (go check out my latest videos for the setup process), but my racing skills aren't quite there yet.

How about you guys? What has your experience been with iRacing, and progressing through the levels?

The key to get out of Rookie and actually improve is consistency. You have to feel confortable with the car and the track before jump into a race. A good load cell pedals also make a huge improvement. And always watch your replays on different camera angles. That makes you identify you own mistakes which can be focused on for corrections. It's a never end learning experience. Good luck

Enjoying watching your journey! Mine is just starting as well! Love your setup!

Learnt in the vee to keep tapping on the throttle to keep it stable. Such a fun car and series, shame there isn’t a longer series outside of rookie tbh. Good vid even if I am late to the party 🎉
  • This was highly entertaining, Im just getting into sim racing and I have the exact thoughts/experience haha!

This is very helpful to watch. I’ve been racing (autocross) real cars for many years, and your description about judging corner entry is spot on. Very tricky to get it right. You can tell when the car understeers because the FFB wheel gets light in your hands, but it’s tough to judge when the rear is stepping out. (The fun part of driving a real car). I’m NOT getting a motion rig. lol!

Glad to see you got things sorted with Fanatec. Remember Rookies gonna Rookie.

I recently just started back into sim racing after about 6 years and started with the Vee. That thing is so finicky and I found out that even when you think you should be in 2nd gear, just stay in 3rd. It will save you so many spins. I did a couple races where I was actually racing some people and it always ended up with me getting wrecked out by either them not giving room or me getting a bit too eager into braking zones. Once I essentially stopped racing people I got out of rookie in a couple of races no problem. Also congrats on Class D!

I love the rig and the screen! A buttkicker will give u that extra ffb , it makes your rig more alive and gives u the feeling when it starts to slide , i can't race without it anymore. Great video
  • Tires are usually cold unless tyre blankets are on before a race and check to have the tyre info on like heat and etc
  • I’ve just got my B license in road. I spent about a month just “testing” the cars I wanted to eventually race before I even entered a rookie race. There are tons of videos and articles on car setups. In rookie racing I only concentrated on finishing clean and didn’t worry about where I placed. I got out quickly.

Na na na na na THUNDER ... foot.... Btw if you're ever interested I'd be more than happy to help you learn some iracing things to get going. I've reset my irating to speedrun 2k a few times and have learned a few things along the way. Subbed! Great content

Bring the G9 closer to you. Place this between the base and the steering wheel. I have a distance of 62cm between my eye and the G9. For me it greatly improved the immersion. The low height of the screen then no longer plays a role. I can also recommend using a HeadTracker. I don't play without it anymore.
  • What if you adjust your force feed back to help you with control of the car ? Also go into your settings for your steering and play around with the steering sensitivity and other settings that mite help.
  • I'm in my second season of iracing now and I've learned it's not rookies so much as it is lower splits where carnage happens, that's not to say it doesn't happen at higher splits but it's less common. I'm sure as you get more experience in the sim and raise your irating you'll have a better time. As for needing to be smooth in the vee, well I've never tried it, as tin tops are my thing but I reckon you need to be smooth in any race car if you want to go fast. Good luck on your iracing career and maybe I'll see you on track sometime.

Don't overtake on the outside unless it's a very long radius corner. The bit where you were wiped out he/she was always going to create a narrowing gap until you hit or go off track. With the speed differential you have against some of these, hang back then close up just before the corner to a good length straight, get a good, fast exit and overtake before you even get to the next corner.

Got to get into this. i do GTsport on PS VR. Its great fun, but not serious enough. Theres always a clown around.

You don't need Motion sim for more feedback, Sim Hub and some rumble motors on your pedals will give you the feedback os traction loss and lockups etc :)
