Newcastle bounced back from a disappointing December to beat Aston Villa 1-3, becoming the first away team to win at Villa Park in almost a year. But was this a flash in the pan, or proof that Eddie Howe's men are back to their intense best. FourFourTwo's Adam Clery examines the game.

“When this team can run, this team can win” is the best way to describe Newcastle this season

Thing is it isnt just the players getting better, eddie howe is also improving as a manager its like the more expeience and injuries he gets the better he gets

I was counting every longer pass Martinez did i the first half- I counted 7 out of 8 that either went straight out of play or were intercepted. In terms of shutting Villa down and preventing them from getting out we were superb. For minutes at a time they were trapped in their third. Howe also saved those three points by bringing on Tino to deal with Bailey. For 10 minutes, Villa looked on top as Bailey was running at and in behind Burn- bringing on Livramento dealt with that and gave Newcastle control back. Not making changes is my biggest criticism of Howe (Not that I have been anything but 100% in support of him) but he did it last night at a vital time. Another issue with the injuries has been that all they could do was recovery. They were literally not able to put in proper training sessions as they had to simply spend time getting physically prepared for the next game.

In addition to the fatigue factor (yes indeed it matter people!), Howe deserves credit for the tactical change when he subbed Livramento in at 75 minutes for Miley, and switched to a back 5. It helped immensely in that NUFC were able to better deal with Bailey on the flank, who had an immediate impact when he came on. Point blank, if Howe doesn't make that switch in personnel/tactics and Villa possibly come away with a point.

Wew, Adam slapping everyone with pure facts throughout the duration of this video. Murphy already back, Anderson/Barnes/Little Joe also on the brink of a return too. Right us off at your own peril! HWTL.
  • @donmongoose
Been burned too many time to think we're "back" but certainly thrilled to see us playing like we were last season
  • Spot on. Thanks for saying everything I've been screaming at TV pundits/commentators for the last two months! 👏

Excellent work Adam. I mean, it’s not rocket science about the injuries but the way you presented it was a stats masterclass. Keep this up and folk might start thinking you know what you’re on aboot, like. Anyway, great job.

Brilliant the way you analyse and explain this. I hope Eddie and the coaches can devise a system (Plan B) for when we can't do this though. It seems to be all or nothing and depends upon availability and fitness. We need to learn to win (or at least not lose) games when we can't play this way.

Love the analysis, this was very informative! Thank you for the work you do. HWTL

Your videos are usually good, but this one was really excellent Adam. Those injury stats really are something else, broken down in a very clear way.

Brilliant overview Adam as usual .. 45% of players missing effectively sums the season up in a nutshell 👏 👏 👏

When Andy Townsend in the Villa commentary mentioned something about not being able to blame injuries, ooh it boiled the piss so it did.
  • @Sohrab5322
Just subscribed! Excellent analysis as always! Eddie Howe is an amazing coach and I hope he stays here as long as possibe!
  • Thanks for breaking this down. It was obvious to some of us that players were playing exhausted due to the lack of rotation options but it’s good to see it broken down. Until FFP changes and allows clubs to build squads of equal depth clubs like Newcastle will always be hit greatly when injuries come along.

Facts the media and pundits either don’t care or just ignore. We’ve still been larely competitive in most games through that period.
  • @bens4602
We were outstanding in that game and you’ve truly reminded me of that. Eddie Howe is a magnificent manager, the fact he got our team through this phase in a relatively respectable fashion and led us to Europe again barring shock FA Cup final heroics (where we CAN rotate, which we couldn’t in the UCL, let alone Group of Death, or PL) is nothing short of a miracle. We got through this spell with HALF A TEAM MISSING. The difficulty was not faced by any other team as much as this, and we pulled through. Eddie Howe, what a man.

Well done Adam. Informative and entertaining, what more do you want?
