This video brought me back to all the wonderful lessons I had with Andre Hayward at UT Austin :).

Youtube determined this video to be endangerment to children, so if the comments are disabled that would be why. A confusing decision to say the least, considering other similar videos with way more views have comments enabled and are not considered to be endangering children?

Thank you Pixar at Disney and the Animators behind the movie "Soul". They actually went out of their way to hire Andy Martin to play trombone and animate everything correctly... more or less. Still a couple of very nitpicky discrepancies but I guess we can let it slide... Get it? Especially since I missed a couple of small details myself, but I blame the faulty transciption I was reading because I don't like taking responsiblity for my own actions.

Andy Martin was the trombone player for the movie Soul. They let him improvise and they precisely matched the animation to his actual movements.

of course they got it right, the whole movie made insane progress in the field of animated instruments

My band director would probably be more mad that the kids stopped playing rather than made fun of her lol
  • As a jazz trombonist, this makes me so happy and their spotlight on trombone made me so happy as well. They even got the scoops!
  • @SarkBM
Soul was very precise on musical instruments, I think they did tracking or just copied an actual trombone player
  • Not just the trombone, but actually all instruments are correctly animated. The first time I watched the movie, I got so glad to see the drums animation matching the song.
  • Of course it’s animated correctly. Pixar doesn’t mess around even in Coco when Miguel plays the guitar he’s playing the correct notes. Also in Ratatouille when Colette is showing Linguine how to properly cook, that is the proper way of how chefs work in the kitchen. Heck that scene is even shown in culinary schools

it makes me so happy she loves what shes doing and it makes me so sad that she keeps being discouraged by others

Fun fact: For the Disney theme intro, Pixar had an actual high school band perform it. It was so perfect, they had to re-record it, but make it purposefully bad.

Soul is one of the most detailed films in the Pixar era, it's obvious that they were gonna animated it right

I love that not only can you tell the crew/animators cared about their work and put in the effort to actually animate all the music scenes correctly, but they’re also being shown appreciation for actually doing it properly I feel like animators don’t get enough credit so this just makes me really happy to see
  • This video is amazing! And I also loved the description. I'm going to use "I don't like taking responsibility for my own actions" for everything right now, for real

Just in terms of the actual film. I love the fact that she stands up when she gets lost in her music. She could easily just sit there and play the sheet music, but once she loses herself she stands up to make use of her diaphragm subconsciously. Just a subtle use of physicality to indicate emotion. Man do I love Pixar.
  • @Effi3
surprises me that the kids laughed at her for playing her instrument better than all of them lmao EDIT: I get it, kids are cruel
  • @petraSidney
your work is not only informative but also visually stunning!

Fun fact: when animating the piano keys, they had to create an entirely new computing system to calculate the weight of the piano players fingers in order to get the right sound. This along with a new hand tacking software to make it as accurate as possible.
  • The most occurring problem I’ve seen with animated brass instruments is the musician basically swallowing the mouthpiece
  • @Genthar
Pixar puts a lot of research and effort into making things like this accurate. It's this kind of attention to detail that makes Pixar even more awesome.

During Covid, my band class did a full complete analysis on the music and soundtrack of this movie, along with other movies, music, and video games. Just absolutely beautiful, it always amazes me when animators take the time to carefully craft the experience of their art to create an almost mirror image of life, but it is so beautiful on the screen it makes me so happy
