The Last ever Train of the Ruston 165 saved from Scrap on the Colne Valley Railway

Published 2024-07-17
Hello everyone,
Today is a big one - with transport booked to bring 281266 to it's new home, we decided it would be fitting to run one last train at the Colne Valley, just to say it had actually run there in preservation.

This video is sponsored by our friends over at AWI, who make binaural microphones - which we use on the channel!
Check them out here! sr3d.co.uk/?ref=LMM

If you want to be amazing and help out with the Fundraiser to help restore this, and other other locomotives in the LMM collection, the link is here: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/save-281266

If you'd like to find out more about the Colne Valley Railway, check out their website here: www.colnevalleyrailway.co.uk/

If you want to come see the 165 yourself, it'll be on show at the Whitwell and Reepham Railway on the 10th of August 2024 for 'LMMfest' our big first big meet of the year!

A video featuring:
Lawrie - Presenter, overly excited to take the 165 out for a trip,
Lozz - Cameraman, equally excited to see the 165 haul its first train!

very happy we saved this one - I would not be surprised if Lawrie ends up with his very own railway line just for the many Rustons he will own
  • You know Lawrie, one thing you've done here is prove to a legion of people that the starter train sets we all had/have, have a prototype. And frankly I fail to see the problem with that. As the old saying goes, "There's a prototype for everything."

Worth every penny. I’m sure everyone who gave is very chuffed to see it running so well.

The more I watch of your channel, Lawrie, the more I hate it that I'm stuck on entirely the wrong side of The Pond to come to these events and help out myself as part of it all. It honestly genuinely almost physically hurts.
  • The Colne Valley is the first preservation railway we visited when I was stationed at RAF Bentwaters in 1991. Great save on charming little loco and a fitting farewell. Cheers Terry
  • Just saw DVT 82121 as you shunted past which i worked many times on the Norwich/Liverpool St run , happily both still here & living the easy life in retirement πŸ˜‚πŸŽ‰πŸŽ‰
  • Lawrie, I am stunned. Usually you get things that don't run and restore then!!πŸ˜‚ she's beautiful!! Congratulations!!! Many happy years of operation of the LMM Railroad!!!
  • @Ma_Deuce_338
Pretty cool man!!! Definitely did not need scraping! Nice save! Always a pleasure when someone cares enough about history to work to preserve it!
  • Love the sound of buffers "bonking" together... even vehicles with "Not to be moved" signs attached! Very therapeutic. With that safeworkng breach I see you were in for a penny, in for a pound and had a SPAD at 12:50 just to leave the network in style! πŸ˜‚ Well done. Regards from Oz. Ga
  • Super , very pleased it's safe from the scrap yard , thanks for sharing Lawrie

Oh this little guy is so cute! Hard worker too. When you mentioned it reminded you of a starter train set and showed the drone footage, I couldn't agree more. Great job saving it!
  • @dizzy2020
BOY would it have been amazing to see you pull the HST - coughs - honest :)
  • At least she is running well and it does look like one of the Hornby sets with the 0-4-0 Barclay or Bagnall diesel shunter from the drone view. One modification I would do is put a tool box cabinet in the cab like what we have in ours at Bewdley, which stores useful tools, battery charger and cleaning items.

Since that thing is so boxy and it has some gray pannels, maybe you should name it "cinder block"
  • My first train set, about 1965, was a blue 0-4-0 diesel (clockwork powered!) with one open wagon and a guard's van! By Tri-ang Hornby naturally. Seeing this really took me back.
  • Can't wait for the restoration and love the videos of rustons
  • I think you should try and get really good pictures of the Ruston in it's current state, the idea of someone eventually making the Rusty Ruston trainset sounds wonderful and hilarious.

Congratulations on Becoming a British sugar loco owner . There definitely loud ours registers about 95 dB in the cab . Ear defenders are a good idea if you can't cope . You will have to return to The DVLR to have a play on our British sugar York 165 . Your going to have many happy days with her I can just see it .
