For those of you that may be a little confused as to what’s going on, here is Mirabel’s Villain story for context.

STORY

Mirabel has always tried to be understanding, tried to accept that her family was meant to shine and she was meant to blend into the background. She tried to be loving and kind and helpful but her family responded to that kindness with cruelty. They refused to see Mirabel as a valued member of the family and in our story instead of forgiving and trying to connect with her family Mirabel rejects them.

Our Mirabel has allowed her disdain and hatred to grow, and now that darkness blinds her. Her pure heart tarnished by bitterness and her mind set on revenge. If they won’t see her as a valued member of the family then she’ll take away that which they treasure most. To be loved and valued less than a candle, it’s laughable really.

And so it’s about time Mirabel placed a mirror in front of her family, showing them exactly what she sees. Pepa, a frightened coward, hiding in her storms and constantly running from the truth. Dolores, like her mother, too afraid of the truth and of what it means to speak up. Isabela, putting on a performance everyday to avoid what facing herself could truly mean, what facing her thorns could mean. And Alma, the Matriarch, sitting so high above them all that she can no longer see her family, can no longer see what truly matter.

Every single member of her family saw Mirabel’s suffering, saw Bruno’s suffering and chose to ignore it. And so they are no longer worthy of her love, no longer deserving of all the sacrifices Mirabel has made to make this family work. And so, the thing they love and value most will be taken from them. Maybe then they’ll learn what truly matters, that is if they make it out alive.

I really really hope you enjoyed the song! We have put in literal months of work to get this out to you and are so hyped to see it released to the world!

Honestly, I’m surprised at how sound Mirabel’s morals stayed throughout the movie. She was told to just straight up stop helping prepare for the ceremony, forced to hide out of sight during the event, given death stares when she did step out, and excluded from the family portrait without a thought. Yet, she immediately put aside her own suffering when she found out how much anguish her family members were carrying around. She had every right to turn the movie into her villain origin story.
  • @emsiyes
I like how Mirabel said "How's it feel to stain YOUR family name", not "OUR family name". It kinda shows just how dissociated she's become with her own family and I love it
  • @Gearex93
I like to imagine that the house supported Mirabel which is why it made no attempt to stop her from taking the candle. Casita and Mirabel clearly have the closest bond throughout the movie.
  • @LeLeLoLoC
I like now straightforward Mirabel is. Isabella attacks her, boom, her gift is gone. No flickering. Just… instant.
  • @Catilena1890
I love how, despite this technically being a "villain" song, Mirabelle is mostly just defending herself and Bruno. Like, she's calling out everyone here and it's beautiful.
  • @fistofthe1stben704
Honestly, a villain song where the villain points out all of the heroes’ flaws saying “this is why I do the things I do,” making the heroes doubt themselves, would be pretty chilling
  • Its kinda crazy that the reason Mirabel didn't get a gift was because Alma lost sight of why she was given a miracle. The only reason Antonio got a gift was because Mirabel didnt want him to have a gift to be useful, she wanted him to have a gift because she wanted him to be happy.
  • @P1nk_H3art
I love how at some point, in the end, the whole family is just crying and scared, meanwhile Camilo is just running towards Mirabel, this shows how much even when you think no one loves you, there‘s just that one person that‘ll always be with you
  • In the movie, Bruno did say he didn't know whether Mirabel would save or destroy the miracle, so this is entirely possible! I love how it fits into the story so smoothly!
  • I really love the line "How's it feel to stain your family name?" because it's totally mocking the fact that the family and Abuela especially are so focused on having this "perfect" image/reputation and Mirabel is taking that all away in a matter of seconds.
  • @mauzawa
I feel that I need to remind everyone - Mirabel is 15. Fifteen years old. Still in her early teens, which to a lot of people are some of the most intense years of their lives, me being one of them. If I was in her seat at that age, the relationship with my family would be forever ruined at best or I would've burned everything down to the ground at worst. Yet Mirabel shows unending compassion and love to everyone in her family throughout the entire movie. She gave everyone the benefit of the doubt and she never did or said anything to hurt anyone. At no point did the family, especially the grandmother, seem to fully realize what they had done to both Mirabel and Bruno. There was never a moment where they seemed to receive the guilt they should be feeling, and they never apologized for how badly they had treated them. There was no doubt that they cared for them, but the way they acted is absolutely unforgivable in my opinion. Mirabel and Bruno deserved so much better and got so much less than that.

“As children we root for heroes, as adults we understand villains” -A wise man
  • @lunatpr5594
I feel the phrase "The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth." fits this song well.
  • @artweeb6039
“Finally free from chasing your love” NOW THIS IS HOW YOU DO A MODERN VILLAN SONG. Like it’s dramatic but just the right amount and there isn’t any break for humor. Just pure intimidating energy from someone in pain and done with it all. The people who made this have serious talent
  • @inyoface05
I like to imagine the reason she turned evil is from the idea Bruno died in this universe. She finds Bruno was living in the walls, shunned from the family. And despite all of his efforts, he dies never being embraced by his family again. With all the crap she's been put through and recognizing she's essentially becoming like Bruno because of her lack of powers, she finally snaps and the song occurs moments after.
  • @anatharone1221
My favourite lines; “From Bruno you turn on me, you whisper as if I cannot see” “Each decibel dismissible” “A constant sign of all that you lack” “I reclaim all that I’ve lost, see you understand what your apathy cost”
  • @gutsmasterson2488
“A child, who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth.” I quite love the idea of the dark Encanto takes. Because of how any of the central children (not Antonio or Camilo) has good motivation to become villains after Bruno is proven innocent. But Mirabel has different motivation to hate her family, but she still loves them.
  • @Sasuhinagirl1
I like how the original version was about how Bruno's visions impacted the family, but this version is about how the whole family impacted Mirabel! You did such a good job at flipping the script!
  • @localsoul9760
I love the butterfly wings she's often shown with. Butterflies and butterfly wings are usually used to represent and symbolize peace, magic, etc. But here, it's used to represent the tragedy of Mirabel's past with her family, which is connected with butterflies. You could also make the argument that it's meant to represent the duality of fairies, fae, etc. While fairies, which have butterfly wings, tend to be depicted as good and kind creatures, they are also sometimes evil and cruel-hearted. This represents how Mirabel used to be kind and good, but her family has pushed her limit. She has been pushed to her breaking point, and so, has turned into what people consider the dark side of fairies.
