Before 1963 Hattersley was a little known rural area beside the mill town Hyde in North East Cheshire.
Manchester was in dire need of homes for its slum dwellers and built out of town estates in very unlikely locations.
One over spill estate was Hattersley, with itis outside loo, but people just didn't want to leave their neighbours and way of life.
It got off to a bad start and even today the name Hattersley doesn't have a good reputation but it has some of the most genuine people living behind its doors.

My parents moved to Hattersley mid 60's when I was 6 months old. I still live there.
  • Brought back happy memories of working at the community centre on Hattersley for about 10 years till 1998.

Lived there '63 to '65 . The only song I remeber was 'Oh dear, what can the matter be. Some silly bugger has sent us to Hattersley.' Can't recall the rest...Appologies for the vernacular

My family moved up to hattersley in late 60s, my grand was married and had two children up there, her mum and dad lived there, my mum was my grans child then had me and my brother. My uncle had 4 kids there. All our extended family came from hattersley. It was a great place growing up everyone knew everyone and as a child you always had someone play with and felt same. I live at puddling lane and partly john Kennedy road.

Who would have thought when I put this video together that Hattersley would have been pushed, unwillingley, back onto the front page of the worlds media yet again. I think this is a timely reminder of lovely setting it is in and the 99.9% of good people who live there. It has been a hard week for so many people. RIP Fiona Nicola Hattersley remembers you,

Hi Glad you enjoyed the video. We live just on the borders of Hattersley which starts on the dip of Mottram Old Rd and not over the bridge at the start of the houses. The song is from a folk group called The Pennine Folk who are all local to Hyde and used to do the folk clubs in the area some 35 years ago. They were a great group who knew the area well. I have used them on a couple of other ut. QV in Liverpool and Werneth Low. The song is called simply Hattersley

My parents moved to Hatterslwy in the seventies, me and my 5 siblings were born here and 3if is still live here with our own children, yes it’s not perfect but it’s home and has been good to us over the years , it’s had its share of trouble but where hasn’t? A lot of criticism is unfair and usually comes from people who never lived here and are from areas far worse (Hyde,Ashton to name just a couple)

moved off 3 years ago but would love to move back!!

Went back for a 'visit' a couple of months ago (lived on Valley Rd for 13 years circa 1970-83) and hardly recognised the place.  Yes, it has a bad reputation (the 'missing house' for example) but it also had plenty of good neighbourly people.  Ones who would look out for each other and everyone knew everyone else's business.  Now, most people don't even know there immediate neighbours names!

Hi, great song. I am trying to find the lyrics, do you know where I can find them please?
  • @arizonagcs
Raffles666 Thanks for watching the YT. Hattersley is constantly developing. Its changed since I  did the video a few years ago. There are still some of the old gang still around and on the whole there are less desirable people on the estate. In some ways it is winning the fight to make people realise its a great community. Unfortunately someone from outside spoils things for the estate, but the community came together and showed their solidarity.
