Lecture: Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde—The Power of Place

Published 2023-07-07
Loren Wright, assistant director of interpretation, discusses how the scenery just outside Paris inspired the five artists of "Van Gogh and the Avant-Garde: The Modern Landscape" and continues to inspire artists today.

Bringing together more than 75 paintings and drawings, this exhibition follows five interconnected artists—Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Émile Bernard, and Charles Angrand—as they retreated to the working-class suburbs of Paris in the 1880s and found there an evolving industrial and social landscape that fueled intense creativity and experimentation.
