Ancient church becomes unique home-studio for Basque artist

Careaga and friends spent 3 months just clearing the structure of debris before starting work to turn the relic into a home.
With help from his architect friend Carlos Garmendia, Careaga preserved the open-feeling of the space by adding only one wall (for a bathroom on the 2nd floor). The cupola now houses a very high-ceilinged kitchen with art gallery walls.
Most of the church celebrates the 10-meter (30-foot) ceilings created 5 centuries ago. In about a quarter of the space, Careaga built a wooden frame to house two open-air floors for a 2nd-floor bedroom and 3rd-floor office. Instead of walls or banisters, the first floor relies on just three thin metal cables for the protection of occupants.
The home is deeply personal, filled with furniture from Careaga’s family, religious art from his grandmother, and idiosyncrasies like a slackline to cross the thirty-foot-drop between the office and a secret bedroom above the cupola. Careaga spent 3 years converting the church to his home with mostly his own labor and help from friends. He continues to add new touches, like converting the bell tower into a reading nook and bunk room for guests.

Seeing the "before" footage really makes this jawdropping. I like that this isnt just some rich guy showing off his architech's work, it's a dude who's really proud of his own project that really came together great.

Anyone else have their heart in their mouth watching him climb around that building?

This church house is my very favorite!! I lived in Northern Spain as a child in 1956-59…..the most prized time of my childhood! I love your house/ studio…I am an artist as well.

Astonishing project. It not just architecture, this is art.

Love the black roof he chose for this stunning structure - perfection! Equally impressive is the art & mechanical design in all of the "no-touch" elements - this took many hours of strategic thought & determination to get it right. Love all of the artwork! Muchas gracias!

Awesome that Careaga saved a dilapidated church & with his architect rebuild into a house he envisioned. TQ Kirsten & family for showing this exquisite home.

His respect for the old while doing something new as well as personal is unmistakable. Commendable 'no touching the wall' decision.
-
This is just unbelievable. I love how he respects the original stonework so much that he declined to use hooks for his artwork. Stunning home.

Spain is beautiful. North to South, east to west.

This is one of my favorite “episodes” of this channel. I appreciate you making this a longer episode. Also the kitchen in the altar was inspired to the point of destiny

Fantastic. Vids like this is exactly why I love this channel.

I couldn’t live/feel comfortable in this place but total respect to him. Love his passion and it’s great to regenerate old buildings.
-
I love how he stayed true to the origins of the church and yet made a wonderfully livable abode. And workplace.

Man, I see places like this and it looks like a dream. The whole area and the building, the rebuild style, everything is so unachievable for almost everyone. Very lucky man.

This just inspired me so much! As somebody who dreams of a little restoration of a family place in rural Croatia, your channel gives me so much joyyyy. I also love your editing and filming style 💃🏻❤️🤩

Wow what a place! Such a joy to watch this. Thanks!

This is absolutely amazing! This is probably my favorite home you’ve ever toured. It’s really inspiring and triggers my imagination. I don’t think I’d ever take on a new project and leave that beautiful church behind. Very, very cool!
