A Drink With Eddie Irvine, Episode #9 (About a team order losing him the 1999 F1 world title)

Published 2016-07-01
Eddie Irvine talks about how a Ferrari team order towards Michael Schumacher at Magny-Cours 1999 cost him the world championship title later that year. And he hits out at the Jaguar team management, again, while having a relaxed drink with Motorsport-Total.com & Formel1.de Chief Editor Christian Nimmervoll.

He certainly did not lose the championship because of that one race in Magny-Cours, that's for sure. If Michael hadn't helped him at Malaysia and Salo in Germany then he wouldn't even have had a chance anymore in Suzuka. As Eddie said himself, at the end of the season you count the points and see where you are, "ifs and buts" don't count.

It takes IMMENSE balls to say: I wasn't Michael Schumacher. Respect, Eddie! <3

Schumacher help him pass 1999 in Malaysia... and Michael keep hakinen in third position...

I have always been a fan of Eddie Irvine.

He lost it in three important incidents after France. First he slid wide and finished 3rd not 2nd in Hungary - 2 points gone. Second of all, after the team fucked up the pit stop at Nurburgring he was in 6th, made a mistake and let hakkinen through who then finished 5th, - two points lost against hakkinen. Last of all his accident in Suzuka in Qualifying, started in 5th which he should've been higher on the grid as he knew the circuit very well.

Maybe I'm one of the few but I loved Eddie's driving style and it was one of my favorites drivers of all time, even though I never cared for the Ferrari team

He's got charisma. He could've been a Hollywood actor.
  • If Michael hadn't broke his leg he would off won championship 99

He underestimates the importance of reliability He had one mechanical breakdown whilst Mika had four. Speed is overrated the 1995 Williams would break down at the drop of a hat. The 1989 Ferrari finished 30% of its races. If it finished 90% it could challenge McLaren.

Irvine for President!!! I love it that he speaks his mind does give a fuck what anyone thinks thats what you call freedom! thats how we all should be !
  • @MrRodzilla
if irvine would have won the 1999 championship it would have been because of help and luck but he was a very underrated driver, the problem was he had some races where he was off, i think he is a better version of frentzen, take a look at his qualifying speed against barrichello in 1995 races and how he retired herbert

Iconico eddie. Il 99 fu uno scandalo, schumacher piuttosto di non far vincere irvine, fece da fedele scudiero ad hakkinen e andó a festeggiare nei box mercedes. i video testimoniano.Eternamente grato a eddie!Sei un idolo.

The biggest incident for me was Ferrari 'losing' one of Eddies wheels during that pit stop .. Eddie was far better than the history books indicate.
  • Imagine how well this series would do since the pandemic. Such a shame it had to end, it was ahead of its time.
  • There's no way the Ferrari beat McLaren on pace in 2000. Ferrari was closer, yes, but not faster.

He lost it at the Nurburgring when Hakkinen was chasing him down for 6th and he locked up in to the chicane.
