This is an absolutely perfect episode for anyone wanting to understand maneuver warfare. The Japanese acted brilliantly never let the British catch their breath. Meanwhile the British had no plan, and were finally cornered.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Kings and Generals, you have outdone yourselves!! I absolutely love the entire pacific series, and to have that to go back and watch chronologically is amazing!! That being said, the prior long video over the entirety of the Guadalcanal campaign was also absolutely brilliant as a stand-alone piece of work. I said with regards to that video when it came out, and I'll say it again here now on this one, these longer segments that cover an entire campaign or area of operations should be considered as material to be taught to current officers and NCO's. The level of detail, and that perfect combination of both the strategic and the tactical, the macro and micro, all in the same segment make your work on the Pacific more comprehensive and unique compared to most of the myriad other sources that I have come across in a film format, and I've seen a whole lot!! Thank you sincerely for your incredible work in all that you do, but from a long-time viewer, this series and all the related longer content is in my humble opinion your best work thus far!!

That evacuation convoy from Singapore on Feb 13th (Black Friday) was attacked by Japanese planes in the waters between Singapore and Sumatra, and largely sunk. One Western historian quoted Japanese radio announcing that "There will be no Dunkirk at Singapore. The British are not going to get away with it this time. All ships leaving Singapore will be destroyed."

The fall of Malaya never fails to stump me. I've seen it so many times, but always find myself trying to warn the British about the obvious dangers of being overwhelmed and outmaneuvered. So little in the way of rear defenses and reactive screening forces to stop Japanese advances...a theme of WW2 for a lot of nations who wanted to play a defensive war....

The loss of Battleship Prince of Wales and Battlecruiser Repulse, Force Z, was actually a landmark moment in naval history. You will find naval leaders that weren't impressed by the air strikes that crippled, mauled Battleships in the earlier British and Japanese carrier strikes at Taranto (November 1940) and Pearl Harbor (three months prior to the Fall of Singapore), respectively. The Battleships were caught in port, immobile. The Americans were attacked even before a declaration of war was made, so they were not even aware war was already underway and were not ready and alert. But the destruction of Force Z was different. Prince of Wales was a modern Battleship, modern equipment, modern anti-aircraft. She had also had earlier combat operation experience as she was part of the pursuit of Bismarck earlier in the same year. Prince of Wales was so new that she was only commissioned in January 1941. When she sank she had not even been in service for 1 year. Anyways, Force Z was alert, out at sea, actively maneuvering to evade air attacks, firing their anti-aircraft guns. Yet Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk by air power alone. This had never happened before in military and naval history. Naval warfare literally entered a new chapter with that event. Air power had finally been proven to be a great danger to warships, even something as powerful as a Battleship. As for Singapore itself, Percival was set up to fail. The British deemed Singapore be a fortress. It's a longtime jewel in the British Empire. It's strategically located in the region. But wartime demands had the British place its equipment elsewhere. 2nd rate equipment were sent to help defend one of the Empire's greatest holdings. The Japanese at this period of the Pacific War were also steamrolling everyone in air, land, and sea. Britain's Singapore and American held Philippines were attacked and would eventually fall to Japan. How MacArthur lost the Philippines also also another big deal in this period of the war. MacArthur had a large, modern air force, yet he lost it instantly in one of the greatest debacles in WWII. The Japanese ground forces in Malaya kept on the attack and maneuver relentlessly. Time was everything to keep the Allies on the back foot north of Singapore.

Fuck man, it always impresses me how much content you put out. However unlike most mass content producers, this is of fantadtic quality. As someone who has been following you for 5-6 years, seeing you guys grow, become professional, whilst still keeping that ineffable quality that makes you stuff so fun and educational brings me joy.

👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 This was a very well done video, Kings and Generals. Thank-you for continuing the Pacific War series.
  • @akmalbruhaha4658
Thanks for the documentary. August is our month of independence. The horror of Japanese occupation still grip the Malayans even today. Malayans too have their own perspective of WW2.
  • They underestimated the Japanese , the Japanese relied on shock attacks and were very good in taking the initiative .
  • Kings and Generals brilliant video. We know it takes a lot of time and hard work to make these long videos. We always appreciate your hard work and dedication towards these videos. Your huge fan from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰🤝🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.
