( www.TFLcar.com/ ) There's no denying the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF is a great looking and fantastically fun little sports car. With rear-wheel drive, 181 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission, there really are few more joyful ways to get from A to B. But, if you're a bigger person, the experience becomes more of a pain, for obvious reasons. Even with the cramped quarters, is the Miata still a no-brainer as an affordable sports car? Nathan finds out!

  • I improved the power to weight ratio of my MX-5 without ever touching the car. I lost 35 lbs. Car seems a bit quicker now for some reason.
  • Fun fact: Mazda is the only automaker to sell over 1 million convertibles (the Miata). They must be doing something right.
  • I'm 6'3" with a 36 inch inseam. I have a 2020 RF , car fits great, it's a fantastic, fun car. I'm in love with mine. The telescoping wheel helps. It's a GREAT car. FUN . My advice is go try it out for yourself. PRO tip, bring your check book.
  • I'm a bigger guy myself, so back in January I went to the Mazda dealership to see if I could even fit in one of these. To my surprise, I fit just fine, and I ended up placing an order for a soft-top Club model with a manual transmission. Fast forward to now, and I finally picked up the car this past weekend. Definitely a blast to drive, and I'm so glad I went ahead and got one!
  • I'm 6' 3", 200Lbs and I fit just fine. The ND is the first Miata I fit in comfortably. I can fit in a NC, but only with the tilt wheel almost all the way up. I do not fit in an NA or NB.
  • i'm 6'1, 240lb, more leg then torso and more bone then flesh. This was one of the most comfortable car I sat in for 2019. Can't afford it now, but it'll always be on my radar.
  • The passenger seat is reserved for your chiropractor. Lol 😂

The inch shorter will come with age but the 80 pounds is up to you, really like your reviews, keep up the good work

Love your enthusiasm and appreciate this review from a different perspective. Nice one 👍
  • I had an NB (2002) Miata for a few years. I had a hard top bolted-on for track days. As you said, VERY fun car to drive, responds like no other vehicle I've driven. I'd love to have one of these someday, just not in the cards right now. I joked with people that I "get in" other cars, but I "put on" the Miata. ;)

The Ford Mustang gt and Chevy Camaro are also great cars with a lot more power for under 40k but I feel the mx5 just delivers a much better overall driving experience.

I have a 2016 which I still enjoy every time I am in it. What surprises me is it averages 40 mpg at 75. Driving from our place near the Canadian border to my daughters in Santa Rosa I get 44 mpg but 39 coming back. It’s downhill from Oregon to the Bay Area.
  • I sat in a Miata once in a dealership and I actually found it pretty comfy.

I am too old and tall for one, great little car Mazda my favourite Japanese brand and they style their cars so well!
  • Ive said they should make a medium version that is bigger in every way. A medium to this small car. They could offer it as a top end option. I think it would sell well but you never know. It certainly would create some buzz because nobody else makes different sizes of the same car. That would scoop up the taller drivers. They could even add different options and put the turbo engine in it.
