Humans have always been explorers. As a species, we are innately curious about what lies beyond our horizon. If the day ever comes when we embark across the cosmic oceans beyond our moon, what vessels will we use to discover new worlds?

Few art projects capture the wonder and awe of voyaging to an unfamiliar planet better than the ‘Explorer’ series. Brought to life by incredible digital artist Christian Grajewski, the story is set in a distant future, where the remnants of humanity journey to a lush exoplanet called Aion

The ongoing ‘Explorer’ project doesn’t just examine a vibrant alien ecosystem, but also documents the fascinating vehicles the early explorers use to chart the unfamiliar planet. So, for this entry into the archive, we’ll tag along with the first wave of explorers, and voyage across this mysterious world in a range of different machines. And as always, you can follow and support the artist using the links in the description. Now, let’s set off towards Planet Aion…

Once I heard the vehicle's name at 5:24 I couldn't stop thinking of how silly something like "WE HAVE TO LEAVE, GET IN THE MONKEY!" sounds
  • I really like how all the vehicles have their name emblazoned upon them, in an stylized manner. Naming them after Earth species, given that they were designed to traverse alien planets, has a nice thematic logic to it :D
  • Please do a vid on the Eternal Cylinder, it's a game with some of the strangest fictional aliens I have ever seen!

What a seriously cool project. The art is by far the most photorealistic I've seen in speculative biology, and I cant imagine the hours that went into this. Curious Archive plays such a key role in showcasing projects like this to the right audience. I really wanna see this project through.
  • There’s a wonderful atmosphere to every one of the images. Yet another great addition to the archive!
  • I can’t get over how phenomenal this art looks. Particularly the textures on the skin of these exotic life forms.

This makes me really want a live-action series based on this project.

I love how these creatures have some convergent evolution, but aren’t just 1:1 with earth animals. Now that’s how you do aliens!
  • @SeraSmiles
You can really feel the barlowe influence in this project, such wonderful designs
  • @Kcaedenn
Wait, how do the “warning colors” work if most of the creatures on this planet use sonar to see?
  • @dandy6576
Damn who could have known I've been missing out on so much from this genre
  • The photorealism in this is truly incredible...It's like watching a real documentary shot on a real planet filed with real life forms.
  • @gertgeist
I would love to see a video on Pikmin creatures. That series was what I think first introduced me to the idea of speculative evolution. In pikmin 2 Olimar even catalogs the creatures he finds and writes about what roles they play in the environment.
  • This project was absolutely incredible and the realism is top notch. Off Topic: Like imagine if Curious Archive did a Spec Evo video on ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’. Him over analyzing weird, cartoony food creatures would be oddly entertaining (In my opinion lol).
  • As an art project, this is phenomenal. As a biologically probable and realistic ecosystem? It’s…not the worst. Definitely not the best, but not terrible.
  • It's rare to find an artist that excels at both creature and vehicular design like this.

the mind expands. a sense of wonder grows. suddenly there is hope amid the gloom. That's what these videos bring.... thanks.
  • the creatures sure look unique. I'm no biologist, but the predator's anatomy I just can't make sense of, most just don't have clear ways they would even move their jaws. I think a lot could be added just from having at least one of each creature with their mouth open in each painting

This looks like such a amazing project, very interesting so far
  • One of the things I really love about your videos are the close captions. It's really helpful for people like me who cannot comprehend some words when spoken. For that, I say my thanks.
