Autism and Plushies! (I bet you won’t watch this. It’s okay)

Published 2023-11-01
This is just me sitting on my bed for several minutes and talking about plushies and being autistic. Awful psychologist, going out in public, ancient autism criteria in the DSM. And some other things I don’t remember. Anyways, enjoy! Let me know if this content is something you want to see. (I am fully prepared for this to flop, but I at least want to give it a chance) Jellycats and plushies have been my main special interest for an eternity so I wanted to share that.

“a portable piece of your safe place”- that’s such a lovely way to put it

I'm also autistic with a special interest in plushies and jellycats so I really liked watching this video with my smudge elephant :D
  • I am 36(former asperger diagnosis) and have over 400 plushies now. I love building pillowfords and i have many soft blankets and pillows. I need it i need the cozyness and colors. People dont get it. But it helps me with recharging and PTSD. It hurts when people call me lowgifted or a child or whatever but i figured its their brain that is broken for feeling weird about plushies. What i do in my home is my business. I love your plushies❤

I haven’t been diagnosed as autistic, but I realize I do have a lot of aspects of autism. I absolutely love plushies, I love how cute they look and how soft they are, and I love just having them on my bed with me 😊
  • Fellow Autistic here. I also like plushies, they’re a comfort for me too. I have plushies of my (human) OC’s, and they’re honestly my friends. I brought my favorite OC plushie, Henry, to therapy one time, and he really helped with the emotional baggage I had after a horrible relationship with my ex. I just wish I could bring my plushies to work again. I used to, but now we have bag checks. ._. Also!! I really like your lamb! They’re super cute. 🥺

This video got randomly recommended to me and as an autistic person who loves plushies I can relate to everything you said. One of my biggest joys is making my own plushies (my birthday is in a few days and the main thing I asked for was fabric lmao) and they (plus the plushies I bought/were given to me) always meant so much to me. I also get super attached to objects and I don't see why that would be "wrong" since it hurts nobody. I don't have a jellycat plushie, but I've seen pictures of them and I really want the mammoth and sabre tooth tiger. Someday!

it's funny, when I clicked on this video my sage dragon was lined up in front of me in the same position yours was. I enjoyed watching :) hearing people talk about their love of jellycats is very soothing, I'm glad they have been such a comfort to you
  • I have suspected for years that I am on the autism spectrum but have never been formally diagnosed. I love plushies and take them wherever I go. They make me feel happy and secure.
  • Hey there! im a higher functioning autism type person. level 1 autism i think. originally diagnosed Asperger's. I wear sensory jewelry , use fidget toys and have tons of unicorn plushies! my husband got me a large pink and purple unicorn plush for my birthday (31 now) we met when i was 28. i once took my fidget cube to doctor office and my most recent fav toy is a tangle!

My classmates and some teachers don’t care that I have plushies but one teacher has been mean about it not crazy often now though probably bc she’s realised I ain’t budging and that my plushies just sit there 😂 on their own seat I used to bring two build a bears now I only bring one and a small plushy witch took me a long time
  • You said all the things I could never articulate about my plush friends. I am late self-diagnosed, but all the signs were always there. ( I have a serious aversion to doctors and the like and will likely never be formally diagnosed due to trauma-related stuff) I am going to be 32 and have collected plushies my whole life, many have come and gone. I have too many that I consider my emotional support buddies. I am a social recluse and always have been. Never really felt lonely when alone, but have felt what I assume loneliness is around other people. Plushies and pets are the best company I have found, aside from maybe 2-3 people I have known. I have plushies in my car because driving can be one of the most stressful things in my life and sometimes I bring a friend from my room along on those harder days. I always have a rotation of a small buddy in whatever bag I have.

I have autism too. I’m obsessed with jellycats. They are my safety and comfort. I carry one with me at all times
  • I just come across your video and I’ve found so much comfort in hearing you talk about plushies as portable safe spaces.i think a lot of people make fun of people who still have them but I don’t think I could be without mine. I would love to learn the names of your plushies in a future video.😊

I’m sorry that a lot of people are so mean and lack empathy ❤

People in their 20’s and maybe 30’s also have plushie keychains, nothing wrong about that. Also I’m 37 with Pervasive developmental disorder. So no one in this group should feel lonely. 🤗
