I love both shows a lot, but i do think the one major difference is that the group in New Girl were actually in their thirties. They are technically past the point where society would think the had to have settled down
-
I never compared the two shows because Jess has 3 male roommates (at one point 4 with Coach) and even though there’s Cece the gender imbalance makes it unique. I always compared Friends with HIMYM.

This show was one of my favourite sitcoms of the 2010's, and didn't rely on a laugh track. The writing was consistently funny, and the characters likeable.

New Girl is just up their with Sitcoms for me. It’s funny, wholesome, great relationships, and is written really well. I’ve rewatched it so many times. It’s my comfort show.

My wife has watched new girl no lie around 9 times since 2020. It's such a greatly written show.
-
I can see the similarities but it's funny how much I love new girl and how I can't seem to get through an episode of Friends.
-
Friends is already a rehash of Living Single, another sitcom with 5/6 friends and roommates learning to live in New York in the 90s balancing work and relationships with entangling romances (a third guy was added in later seasons).
-
I'm surprised that you didn't mention that friends was originally a rip-off of living single that started 2 or 3 years prior.

first of all, really interesting take on the core ingredients of a sitcom, and the use of cameras and similar narratives in it. for me what's significantly different is "new girl" nonsense humor especially between the guys, and thats why its fricking hilarious for me. the fact they dont really want to change but other people kind of make them to maintain healthy relationships is what keeps it going

I don't know how to put this into words, but as someone who grew up with a lot of internalized misogyny, the character of Jess always meant so much to me. There was something radical about having a character of a popular show be unabashedly feminine. I know rachel is too, but it's just not the same. Maybe it's sexist jokes or plot points that kinda undercut the power of the character of Rachel, not sure.

There's definitely a lot of similarities between the two shows (and the others you mentioned) but in the end I think the concept of "attractive 20 somethings living together" is a trope. The "Will They Won't they" arc is one that writers use because they get themselves stuck in how to write relationships, and Winnie the Bish wasn't really a well defined character until much later in the series.

Well Friends is basically the stolen white version of the show “Living Single” so we can call it even.
-
I feel like it's completely different to friends 🤷♂️ I admit it does have some details that cross over but I feel that's just stereotypes that the audience can relate to so when they deliver thier stories you feel engaged with the characters bc most of that they are conveying you have experienced in some way. It just happened that the audiences issues and lifestyles haven't changed that much between the release of the shows.

All things considered, New Girl still has something that Friends will never have, black characters.
-
Can’t have Friends without In Living Single & can’t have a ton of sitcoms without Friends. That’s just how it happens. Also, Winston wasn’t the “zany character” til later seasons as you already know.
-
FRIENDS stole its premise from LIVING SINGLE and its only fair NEW GIRL takes its premise from Friends
-
New Girl is the more family friendly version of Always Sunny. They've even came out and said how similar they created the characters to always sunny. Nick is Charlie, Winston is Mac, Shmidt is Dennis. Just in a much more family friendly way. The cast of Always Sunny was all for it and didnd't even care a bit.
-
“New Girl” is a show about friends in their 30s though.
-
Do one about friends being the same show as living single

Don’t forget about Happy Endings… a criminally underrated show that ended too soon. It also followed the formula of Friends like HIMYM, but I didn’t care.
