Man dead after firing at police responding to shots-fired call at Kent apartment complex

The Kent Police Department said it’s investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday at 102 Madison Avenue North.

Police spent the morning gathering evidence at the Madison Plaza apartment complex. The entrance has been blocked off with crime tape, and evidence markers are scattered near several shell casings outside.

According to the KPD, officers responded to a 911 call reporting sounds of six to seven gunshots being fired.

"Officers arrived in the area and were outside of their patrol vehicles when they heard more gunshots that were believed to have been fired at them," the KPD wrote on social media. "One Officer returned fire towards the suspect who was on an upper story of the building at the location."

Police said officers cleared the building and detained someone who said their brother, believed to be the suspected shooter, "had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an apartment on the upper floor."
