Today we're going to talk about a type of vitamin B12 I would avoid: cyanocobalamin.

Cyanocobalamin is a synthetic version of vitamin B12. It's a very cheap version, and it's hiding in many fortified grain foods, synthetic vitamins, energy drinks, B12 injections, and even infant formulas. It's also typically present in very high doses in these products.

The problem is that there is a cyanide molecule attached to the cobalamin. Cyanide shuts down the oxygen to your mitochondria.

Potential side effects of cyanocobalamin:
• Vomiting
• Stomach problems
• Low potassium
• Headaches
• Fever
• Dizziness

It's true that the liver can detoxify small amounts of cyanide. But what if someone consumes large amounts of products containing this synthetic B12?

Some people also have problems with their detoxification genes that could cause them to have trouble getting rid of cyanide. Another common genetic problem with methylation can cause the effects of synthetic vitamin B12 to be worse.

The best form of vitamin B12 is the natural version called methylcobalamin. This version is the active form of vitamin B12 and stays in the body longer than the synthetic versions.

Potential benefits of methylcobalamin:
• It may help improve sleep
• It can decrease the need for sleep
• It can help you wake up feeling alert and refreshed
• It can help you fall asleep faster
• It's great for the nervous system (especially the myelin sheath)
• It supports healthy eyes
• It increases melatonin
• It decreases homocysteine
• It can help regulate cortisol
• It supports the red blood cells

Causes of vitamin B12 deficiency:
• Not consuming foods high in vitamin B12
• Stomach inflammation
• H. pylori
• Low stomach acid
• Gastric bypass
• Inflammation in the intestines

Who came here from the Don't drink Celsius Energy drink video 😂
  • Started keto with intermittent fasting 7 days ago thanks to you. My inflammation is gone. My stiff neck is gone. Sinus cleared up. No more fatigue. I can think clear. Even my dandruff is reducing. My sleep has improved. I sleep deeper, my wife noticed I don’t move or get up as much. Can’t wait to see more benefits to come. Thank you.

Good morning Dr Berg and all who watch your videos. Dr Berg you are a gem a limited edition, when you school us on our health.... May God bless you and your family...a true fan from New York!!
  • I mostly eat vegetarian but I eat fatty fish only (sardines, anchovies and salmon). I eat seafood for my B12 and added beef liver for the B12.

I been taking this Synthetic B12 (Cyanocobalamin) for years. And experiencing tingling and symptoms mentioned. Thank you Dr. Berg!

I am a "Senior" who has had enormous benefit from switching to methylcobalimine from the cyano-version. I USED to be very diabetic with great peripheral neuropathy damage to my feet and even hands. That damage is "supposed" to be permanent but mine is virtually GONE and I have regained full sensation everywhere---NO numbness or fire-feet! Seniors tend to become unable to properly digest and absorb vitamin B-12 from lack of stomach acid, and develop a range of "ageing" conditions, especially Psoriasis. A daily "megadose" of one to two and even three milligrams of Methylcobalimine is warranted, not toxic, and do not give up until you find an Internist who agrees with that. Yes, my psoriasis is gone too!.............................elsullo

Got to love this man who looks out for our health...God bless you doctor 😊
  • Thanks Doc, I worry about my liver bc I lost a few friends to liver troubles. I checked my b-complex and it does have the cheaper B12 version. I'm tossing it in the trash today. I like water, so I never drank that colored sugar water that the conglomerates push on us. I also stopped oats and cereals and switched back to mostly just bacon and eggs. I've lost some weight by doing this.
  • Dr. Janine put the information out in one of her videos. I threw out my B complex vitamins, gummy multi vitamins, and Nutrisystem powdered shake packets, several weeks ago. All these had cyanocobalamin. Your info confirms it more. Thanks.

Thank you Dr Berg! Are you still doing the video on how stress can cause good bacteria in your gut to turn pathogenic and what we can do to help with this problem? Thank you in advance 👍🏽

Thank you Dr. Berg. I was researching to find out dosage of cyanocobalamin B12 for my husband. I came across your video and am so thankful I did. I am going to look for the methylcobalamin instead. We truly appreciate you putting out the truth on synthetic vitamins.
  • So much great information. I’ve been in the fitness industry for quite some time and have been researching and practicing holistic and natural health for myself for many years, but supplements were something I was never able to spend a lot of time researching. It’s such a rapidly changing part of medicine as we better understand human biology. I appreciate you breaking it down. You’re such a caring person to make this vital information available to everyone. Thank you!

It’s so frustrating that this type of B12 is in almost everything that claims to have B12 over the counter. I got a whole food ‘supposedly’ good one without all the fillers and flow agents only to learn it was cyanocobalamin, the same is in my nutritional yeast flakes. So disappointing because I thought I was doing my body good but kept getting tummy issues and headaches from the B12 capsules. Thank you for explaining in depth Dr Berg, this is helping us get informed and know what look for on the ingredients labels.
  • @amymartin5753
I’m vegan and will switch to methyl b12. Currently my B12 supplements have the cyanide synthetic! Happy to learn this!

if I told anyone about Methyleneblue they would ask when I started drugs. jokes aside, B12 and other vitamins helped pull me out of a depression, and I mean bad depression. I had GALLONS of urine in jugs, never left my room, wanted to die, and felt like I was going to die anyway. I'm still recovering but I finally had the energy to clean my room. I have carpet again. I have more energy and I'm not constantly sore. I've been slowly picking up my weights again, though I can feel how out of shape I am. I'm still thin but if I get to the point of sweating it feels like I'm going to pass out from heat exhaustion and my heart feels weak. I used to have a very strong heart but after years of sitting and not doing anything I'm sure something must have happened. so I try not to stress my heart too much but I'm slowly building cardio and endurance again. I don't think anyone will read this or care but it helps me write it down. it's a really big achievement for me. anyway, have a great day and stay healthy :)
